Your WiFi device seems
Hard Blocked : Yes

That probably means is Off.

Maybe some switch exists that turns ON the WiFi . Try it.

Saying "switch" , meaning some keys combo.. such as : Fn + F5 (or some other F key).

Thanks

Hi guys thanks for answering.

I have a switch, a botton to turn it off / on, (never tried a combo) but it only work for one of the 2, hard / soft blocks.

I wanted to make it dual, but I am afraid I have deleted windows 8. so now I have basically nothing.
I've tryed more versions of ubuntu, but the wifi problem won't change.

I think I have to download the drivers for wifi and install them... but I don't have a clue... :(

Thank you again for your help!

I believe your PC is experiencing the following bugs:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1086650

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1049466

I see 2 options for you:

1) either revert back to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2) or Install kernel 3.6.x from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6.6-raring/ :

linux-headers-3.6.6-030606-generic_3.6.6-030606.201211050512_amd64.deb
linux-headers-3.6.6-030606_3.6.6-030606.201211050512_all.deb
linux-image-3.6.6-030606-generic_3.6.6-030606.201211050512_amd64.deb
linux-image-extra-3.6.6-030606-generic_3.6.6-030606.201211050512_amd64.deb

Then download and install firmware from kernel.org by running the following Terminal commands:

git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dwmw2/linux-firmware.git

sudo cp linux-firmware/rt3290.bin /lib/firmware

Then reboot your PC and retest wireless.

I have tryed to install 12.04 LST (I wish it would have been that simple), but I have the same problem: can't see wifi in my network folder!

now, for the second solution you gave me Mark (THANKS) I have some questions.... sorry I am only an amateur doing my best!

-do I have to install ubuntu 12.10 - 64 again, and then install those kernel from a wired connection? (I can do that latar at work)

-the downloading and installation of firmware, are from terminal only or I have to connect to www.kernel.org and download something in particular?

-When rebooting do I have to change something in BIOS, (In these days I have messed whit them a lot) or do I have just to restart?

sorry again, but I want to be sure to do everything correct before coming here and whineing again!

GRAZIE!!!!!

First try installing the 3.8 kernel (yes I changed the kernel version suggestion ;-) and firmware in Ubuntu 12.10.

If not working, try installing the 3.8 kernel and firmware in Ubuntu 12.04 (after a clean install of Ubuntu 12.04)

The Terminal commands to use while using a working, wirED Internet connection:

wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc2-raring/linux-headers-3.8.0-030800rc2-generic_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_amd64.deb

wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc2-raring/linux-headers-3.8.0-030800rc2_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_all.deb

wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc2-raring/linux-image-3.8.0-030800rc2-generic_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_amd64.deb

wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc2-raring/linux-image-extra-3.8.0-030800rc2-generic_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_amd64.deb

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.8.0-030800rc2-generic_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_amd64.deb

sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-3.8.0-030800rc2_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_all.deb

sudo dpkg -i linux-image-3.8.0-030800rc2-generic_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_amd64.deb

sudo dpkg -i linux-image-extra-3.8.0-030800rc2-generic_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_amd64.deb

Then download and install firmware from kernel.org by running the following Terminal commands:

git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dwmw2/linux-firmware.git

sudo cp linux-firmware/rt3290.bin /lib/firmware

Then reboot and retest wireless using the 3.8.0-030800rc2-generic_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_amd64 kernel.
Do NOT test wireless anymore using the 3.2 or 3.5 kernels.

I also suggest reading these guides and books to learn more about the GNU/Linux command line:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ExternalGuides

I've spend my last 3 night trying to understand mora about ubuntu! (you can imagine my starting knowledge! )
But it feels like the more I read the more I messed up!

anyhow: I get the first part, downloading the kernel, and install them with sudo dpkg... (I hope)

but from kernel.org what do I have to download? this? : mainline: 3.8-rc6 2013-02-01

or can I download from terminal using the git clone git, without going on the website?

"Then reboot and retest wireless using the 3.8.0-030800rc2-generic_3.8.0-030800rc2.201301022235_amd64 kernel.
Do NOT test wireless anymore using the 3.2 or 3.5 kernels."
How do I retest wireless using that kernel?!?! I have no idea!!!

(please bear with me!!!!)

By running the commands below, you are fetching the linux-firmware.git file from kernel.org and installing the firmware file rt3290.bin :

git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dwmw2/linux-firmware.git

sudo cp linux-firmware/rt3290.bin /lib/firmware

Look at the command. There is git.kernel.org in the command I gave you. That is what I meant by "getting from kernel.org"

Just copy-paste the commands I gave you into the Terminal and it should work....

ok, I will try to do that in a bit at work, first with 12.10 (64) and then with 12.04 (64) and I will let you know.

about the kernel.org, I thought so, but becasue I never downloaded with terminal I wanted to be sure.

so when this is done, I have just to restart my pc and it should find my wifi?
or for "retest wireless" shall I do something in particular?

(this is my last question, after it, I will spend the night trying before bother you again, I promise!)

THANK YOU AGAIN

Concerning the "retest wireless": To retest wireless, I suggest resending us the full Terminal output of the following command, just like you did at the start of this thread, but AFTER installing the newer kernel and firmware (in Ubuntu 12.10 and/or Ubuntu 12.04).

I am NOT writing that your wireless will work for sure after the procedure. I am just HOPING it will...

Here is the command :

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scan | egrep -i 'chan|ssid'; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net; lsusb; nmcli nm status; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep '02:00|80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rror|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt5|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '80211|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'wpa|icd|etwork'; netstat -rn ; cat /etc/resolv.conf; sudo lsmod

ps: the connection is working but it's way slower than before. (I had a acer 4 years old)
how is this possible?
can I do something to improve it?

Thanks

You followed my instructions correctly. :-) (good)

Your wireless driver (rt2800pci) can successfully detect several wireless access points (good):

                   Channel:1
                    Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1)
                    ESSID:"The_Black_Swan_Hostel"
                    Channel:2
                    Frequency:2.417 GHz (Channel 2)
                    ESSID:"WLAN_FA79"
                    Channel:6
                    Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6)
                    ESSID:"Lagneral1"
                    Channel:6
                    Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6)
                    ESSID:"meredith"
                    Channel:6
                    Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6)
                    ESSID:"Orange-6c55"
                    Channel:1
                    Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1)
                    ESSID:"GARCIA"
                    Channel:11
                    Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
                    ESSID:"The_Black_Swan_Hostel"
                    Channel:11
                    Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
                    ESSID:"WLAN_4CA5"

You are using the new kernel as I recommended (good):

Linux stefano-HP-Pavilion-Sleekbook-15-PC 3.8.0-030800rc2-generic #201301022235 SMP Thu Jan 3 03:36:23 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Your wireless adapter successfully connected to your router (good):

[ 82.307382] wlan0: authenticate with 00:22:f7:2a:f1:58
[ 82.314640] wlan0: send auth to 00:22:f7:2a:f1:58 (try 1/3)
[ 82.316140] wlan0: authenticated
[ 82.318527] wlan0: associate with 00:22:f7:2a:f1:58 (try 1/3)
[ 82.325117] wlan0: RX AssocResp from 00:22:f7:2a:f1:58 (capab=0x411 status=0 aid=1)
[ 82.325454] wlan0: associated

However, I suggest logging into your wireless router and:

1) changing the wireless transmission to channel 9, to avoid wireless interference from the other wireless routers (via the router's web homepage)
2) enabling SSID broadcasting on the wireless router (via the router's web homepage)
3) temporarily disabling encryption for troubleshooting purposes (via the router's web homepage)
4) forcing the wireless router to transmit data at Wireless-G speeds (54MBps) instead of Wireless-N speeds (via the router's web homepage)

Then retest wireless.

If that does not help, you could try installing and testing the 3.7.0-030700rc2.201210201535
kernel (via http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.7-rc2-quantal/) the same way that you installed the 3.8.0-030800rc2-generic kernel....
It could be that the 3.8.0-030800rc2-generic kernel is too new for your Ubuntu install and causing this slowness issue...

I have no further suggestions to make....

One more thing: after applying the changes to your wireless router, make sure to reboot the wireless router....

Try:

echo "options mac80211 probe_wait_ms=1000" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rt2800pci.conf > /dev/null

Reboot to test

I have tryed

echo "options mac80211 probe_wait_ms=1000" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rt2800pci.conf > /dev/null

but doesn't change a lot.
when I start the pc, the connection is going great, but just after 1 minute it become slow again!

more than this, I can't do anything to the router, casue in my building have optic fiber... so I don't have a router.

(if I am understanding correctly)

...

this might work?

sudo modprobe -r rtl8192cu

sudo modprobe rtl8192cu swenc=1

becasue it looks like it is!

how do I make it permanent?

THANK YOU AGAIN

ok.... now is working well. I am not sure exactly why because (purist of ubuntu will kill me for this but) I've put a lot of codes in my terminal. But it seemed to me that this last post did the trick. (thank you actionparsnip)

the only thing I am a little worried about is this:
when I start my pc, before ubuntu, my pc is telling me "kwm disabled by bios"

do I have to be worried?
do I have to enabled them?
will everything explode?
