Wireless keeps disconnecting

Asked by Ahmad Humayun

I just got my new Sager NP9130 (Clevo P151EM) laptop, and I installed Ubuntu 12.04 as soon as I got a chance. I noticed that my wireless connection keeps dropping. At times it automatically reconnects and sometimes it pops the password box (with the password already typed in) asking me to reconnect. My network card is a Killer 1202 (it is a Atheros AR9462 http://www.wikidevi.com/wiki/Atheros_AR5B22 - which apparently is supported by 12.04 -> http://www.ubuntu.com/certification/catalog/component/pci:168C:0034-WIRELESS/)

Any clues to what might be happening? Here's the output to the diagnostic:

There are a lot of wireless access points in your area that are transmitting on the same channel. This can cause wireless interference which can explain the disconnects.

I suggest logging into your wireless router and changing the transmission channel to channel 3.
In the wireless router, also disable use of IPV6 and force use of Wireless-G (54Mbps) speeds.

I also suggest installing wicd as a replacement for NetworkManager.

Run these commands to install wicd:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install wicd

To further improve the connection stability, open a terminal and enter the following commands:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf

at the end of the file add this:

options ath9k nohwcrypt=1

Then reboot and retest wireless using wicd (network manager).

Hope it helps.....

If two or more Wifi hot spots are using same channel (or even neighbouring channels) you will get interference. I agree with Mark try channel 3. This is set up in your router usually via a web page: Instructions should have come with your router. If you need further help let us know make and model of router.

Can you help with this problem?
