TP-Link TL-WN822N losing connection under load

Asked by adam

The TL-WN822N USB adapter usually works but under heavy load it drops the wireless connection. Disconnecting and reconnecting the device fixes the problem.

I've got a customer desktop pc, but nothing special
   MSI P55-GD65 motherboard
   Intel I5 processor
   4GB Corsair RAM
   Ubuntu 12.10.1 lts

Anyhelp would be appreciated to fix this problem or recommendations of a reliable wireless-N usb device.

You can try this code from a terminal and after a reboot , check the system again.

echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf

IF above code not fix the problem , then search on how you can reduce the number of parallel connections via router's configuration page
OR
maybe if you change a channel the problem will be fixed..

Thanks

NikTh.

This code didn't fix the problem
>>echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf

It's as though the driver is crashing??

Here's what gets logged in syslog at the point of the dropped connection?

Feb 17 13:22:51 coolmaster kernel: [ 1164.158198] usb 1-1.6: USB disconnect, device number 5
Feb 17 13:22:51 coolmaster wpa_supplicant[1712]: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=00:24:01:de:e6:15 reason=3
Feb 17 13:22:51 coolmaster kernel: [ 1164.313485] wlan0: deauthenticating from 00:24:01:de:e6:15 by local choice (reason=3)
Feb 17 13:22:51 coolmaster kernel: [ 1164.395209] cfg80211: All devices are disconnected, going to restore regulatory settings
Feb 17 13:22:51 coolmaster kernel: [ 1164.395217] cfg80211: Restoring regulatory settings
Feb 17 13:22:51 coolmaster kernel: [ 1164.395223] cfg80211: Calling CRDA to update

Is the device periodically failing .. resulting in the pc seeing it as a usb disconnect?

Hi,

Yes you have a point here.

As you can see , the device (USB) seems to periodically disconnecting from PC. So either the device is failing or the usb port not gives enough power (ac) . Try to change usb port (I assume the PC has more than one) and retest.

Thank you.

Updating to the last stable wifi module and firmware from http://wireless.kernel.org/ appears to have fixed it.

steps...

cd /tmp
wget http://wireless.kernel.org/download/htc_fw/1.3/htc_7010.fw
wget http://wireless.kernel.org/download/htc_fw/1.3/htc_9271.fw
wget http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/stable/v3.8-rc7/compat-drivers-3.8-rc7-1.tar.bz2
tar -xvjf compat-drivers-3.8-rc7-1.tar.bz2
cd compat-drivers-3.8-rc7-1/
make
sudo make install
sudo make unload
sudo cp /tmp/htc_9271.fw /lib/firmware
sudo cp /tmp/htc_7010.fw /lib/firmware
sudo modprobe ath9k_htc

Hi,
Good news.

Keep an eye on this please. If the problem not appears again (means solved once and for all) , and definitely was a firmware problem then you can inform the developers by opening a bug report.

Such as "This wireless card not working correct with this module (firmware problem) But it works correctly with This firmware from This kernel"

So the developers will know and maybe apply a patch to the Original Ubuntu Kernel.

Thank you

Nick,

It's been a month and I haven't seen the problem again I'm pretty sure it fixed once and for all.
Where should I open this other bug report?

Adam

that worked for me thanks. Maximum connection speed jumped up from 130Mb to 300Mb too which was nice.

Thinks got a little hairy when I did 'sudo make unload' but a hard reset brought the computer back. I then had to
sudo update-initramfs -u
(not sure if that was neccessary)
and I then picked a new nvidia driver in the Restricted Drivers gui to force nvidia driver to be reinstalled, restarted and all seems fine.
So I suppose my problems were down to nvidia binary blob and perhaps also the fact I run the real time kernel on ubuntu-studio.

I am wondering if I will now have problems updating / maintaining the OS along with the newer wifi module and firmware.

Anyway, thanks for the guide adamkath.
