b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4318] (rev 02) not working on Hewlett-Packard Pavilion zd8000 (EC303UA#ABA) /3082, BIOS F.34 09/20/2005 in Ubuntu 12.10

Asked by Aaron Smith

Hello,

I am running Ubuntu 12.10 on an HP Pavillion zd8000. Network manager would let me add network information, but would not connect me automatically or let me connect manually. I tried using wpa_supplicant instead of Network Manager but it didn't appear to work either (eth0 cannot scan?). I thought it might be a driver issue, however according to what I read online, wext should work for the Broadcom wireless card I have. So I'm lost as to what to do next.

 Output of "sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scan | egrep -i 'chan|ssid'; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net; lsusb; nmcli nm status; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt5|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'wpa|icd|etwork'; netstat -rn ; cat /etc/resolv.conf; sudo lsmod"

Try adding the firmware in package linux-firmware-nonfree (on a wired connection). Then the b43 driver should work for you, since it's not blacklisted.

Hi,

Your Terminal output shows the following issue:

 20.527238] b43-phy0: Broadcom 4318 WLAN found (core revision 9)
[ 21.401381] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 180x56
[ 21.661850] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode5.fw" not found
[ 21.661860] b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43-open/ucode5.fw" not found

Please proceed with the following Terminal commands:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer

b43-fwcutter and firmware-b43-installer exist in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a working wired Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and install it.

The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.

Then REBOOT and retest wireless.
