My ubuntu 12.04 laptop wont connect to the internet, and when i click the network id it says network disconnected, not 2wire.

If you run:

ping -c 4 8.8.8.8

DO you get replies?

how, im only 1 year into ubuntu i never learned how to use the terminal, i could do this in windows but not linux.

*face palm* nvmd my mom reset the gateway and it connected, sometime technology just wants to use the trollface, so it does and we pay for it.

Ping is the same in every OS you can name, even Cisco OSes for switches etc. Didn't think to try the same as you would in Windows?
