conflict between b43 and ndiswrapper drivers -> UNCLAIMED Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11a/b/g [14e4:4312] (rev 01) not working on Dell Precision M90 in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS

Asked by v veirs

I know my PCI card is working as it runs when I boot under XP.

But, I can't figure out why 12.04 can't get it going. I am trying
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedureg the troubleshooter

and am at Step 2. Below is the output:

Can anyone see a big red flag(s) in all this?

Thanks so much,
Val

Please copy-paste the following commands into the Terminal:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer

Then reboot and retest wireless.

When I ask about the hardware, the answer below suggests (via network UNCLAIMED) a driver problem, right?
How can I check to see what driver(s) are available on my machine. I do know that in earlier efforts on this problem I found windows drivers (bcmwl5.inf) and tried to use them.
When I run: sudo ndisgtk
I get a window that says that bcmwl5 with Hardware present:Yes is the "Currently installed Windows Driver"
Perhaps I should remove this driver and see what happens. Hmmmmmmmm.

You need to use the b43 driver. So the "UNCLAIMED" driver status simply means your b43 wireless driver is being blocked/blacklisted in one of your configuration files.

Check each configuration file in /etc/modprobe.d/

and remove any configuration lines containing the following:

blacklist b43

The following command will help find the offending configuration line(s):

grep b43 /etc/modprobe.d/*

I don't have any blacklist b43 lines in files in the modprobe.d folder.

Puttering around I found that nm-tool knows about my wireless on lan0 and says its state is disconnected. It has found the driver (b43) and found my access point (OrcaSound).

If I could just connect the wlan0 device, maybe I would be up and WiFi-ing.

Here is the nm-tool output:
val@val-dell:~$ nm-tool

NetworkManager Tool

And I spent some time looking at actionparsnip's suggestion above. At this time I don't have Module wl (whatever this is)

val@val-dell:~$ sudo modprobe wl
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/aliases, it will be ignored in a future release.
FATAL: Module wl not found.

Should I have wl?

I already gave you the answer in #2

Your PC's wireless chipset is 14e4:4312

The chipset in

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/183634

is also 14e4:4312

In both threads (this one and the other one), the b43 driver is required.

Furthermore, in

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BroadcomSTA(Wireless)

AND in

http://nfolamp.wordpress.com/2011/10/15/ubuntu-11-10-getting-wireless-bcm4311-working/

they state that the 14e4:4312 needs the b43 driver, not the wl driver.

I rest my case....

Thanks for this clarification re the wl driver, Mark. I will stay away from that.

hwinfo reports (below) that I am using:
  Driver: "b43-pci-bridge"
  Driver Modules: "ssb"
and that:
 Driver Info #0:
    Driver Status: ssb is active
    Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe ssb"
  Config Status: cfg=new, avail=yes, need=no, active=unknown
Does this all seem correct to you?

From nm-tool everything looks good except:
How can I switch from disconnected to connected?

Thanks for all your help!!
Val

Your wireless driver conflict looks like between the b43 and the ndiswrapper (Windows driver). I suggest you purge all the ndiswrapper... packages and reboot. Looks like you are not blacklisting the b43 driver, and have a copy of the firmware, so your wireless should work.

Rick, thank you so much for all your help on my wireless problem.
And, Ubfan, thank you so much for telling me to purge the ndiswrapper files.

I now have my wireless working. !! F A N T A S T I C !!

It seems that I have to open a terminal and enter sudo modprobe b43 after any reboot to have the wireless be recognized but that is a small price to pay -- and I can probably make a little script file that runs on start up. I'll putter with that now, but thanks to you two one more time.
