Unable to get wireless connection working
Continuation with Dell Lattitude D600 initial setup.....
Lubuntu 12.04 did install (thank you) but would not configure the network and indicated that I need a piece of non-free firmware (tigon/
I have a Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band USB Adapter(wnda3100v2) I was hoping to use to wifi enable this laptop that is otherwise not wifi ready. From everything I read however, it seems this card will not work with Linux. I've tried installing the software with no success. Also, Ubuntu doesn't acknowledge anything when I plug the card into a USB port. Unless someone can help with this(my preferred choice), I do have another alternative that holds some promise......
I also have a dongle that claims to work with a Linux OS. I can get the software from CD to PC and unzipped but can't confirm it is being setup/installed. When I plug in the dongle, Ubuntu recognizes there is a wireless connection available. In this case, it happens to be my Verizon 4G lte MiFi that's being detected but I assume if I can make this password protected connection then any free wifi should work. I think there is still a compatability or configuration problem that I can't get passed. I can't get authenticated and I'm very familier with the password for my MiFi card. It's not that the authentication fails but keeps cycling and asking me to input the password again, never connecting.

Can you give the output of:
sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; uname -a; sudo rfkill list; dmesg | grep -i firm
Thanks

We only have part of the response here possibly because you thought grep was a separate command.
Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) and try again copy and paste its all one command
--------------
sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; uname -a; sudo rfkill list; dmesg | grep -i firm

Sorry for my lack of understanding. The full string certainly yielded very different results.

Did you have the adapter when you ran the command? Can you also give the output of:
lsusb
Thanks

Sorry, doing too many things at once.
Results are below. First pass is from the long string followed by lsusb with the Netgear adapter plugged in. There is no corresponding software loaded as the install CD doesn't have any Linux format files that I can find. The Netgear website doesn't give any indication that it will work with Linux OS. This would be my preferred choice if it would work.
Second pass is the long string followed by lsusb with the mini adapter (dongle) plugged in(usb 802.11N 150 mbps). The install CD has a Linux zip file which I copied to the laptop and extracted. Beyond that I didn't know what else to do.
I noticed in the configuration results "driver=tg3" notation. That reminded me that when installing Lubuntu, there was a message about non-free firmware that I needed "tigon/
hope this helps

With the dongle fitted your system appears to be recognising it as a wifi interface can it see your network?
To test open a terminal and give us the output of

The wifi appears to be working but not finding a network. Is your wireless router tuned on and reasonably close to you computer?

Not that I don't appreciate all the effort but I think you got lost in the weeds this time. I believe I answered that when I submitted my original question at the top of this string.
Yes, my wireless Verizon card is turned on, 5 feet away and working fine. That's what I'm using with this laptop. The problem laptop (Dell Lattitude D600) is right beside me. It finds the network, calls it by name but craps out on the password. Never do I get a message that the password is incorrect. It just cycles to the "enter password" screen over and over every 30 seconds or so.

I know it was probably a stupid question but I had to ask to be sure. Its unusual for
sudo iwlist scan
to find nothing I can usually see 5 or six networks in addition to my own but I guess it depends on how many of your neighbours have wifi and how close they are.
If the laptop that works is linux can you run the following command please it will tell us what networks it can see.
sudo iwlist scan
For Windows 7 the equivalent command is
netsh wlan show all

Oh, no problem with the question. I'm sure I'm not the only newbie you're trying to help. This laptop is running windows 7 (Compaq CQ60-423DX). The results of the command are below. A little more info though......
I live out in the country so to speak. One neighbor's wi-fi network shows up sometimes but nothing else. The Verizon MiFi 4GLTE card is my only access to the internet so I know it's working fine. As I take this card with me when I travel, I have it set to require password authentication. As you'll see by the command results, this computer connects using WPA2-personal authentication. I have the Dell (running LUbuntu) set to WPA WPA2 Personal with password required. It always sees the network, knows the name (SSID)and tries to connect. I enter the password, it spins for 30 seconds or so and asks me to enter it again. Doesn't give an error though. Just acts like it's coming to the password screen for the first time. Once in a while, it actually says the connection has been established. But any website I try to reach yields the same error. Something like Server not found, DNS server name not resolved. I don't currently have that in front of me to be more specific but you've seen the error before. Now for the results.......and thanks for continuing to work with me.
