After upgrading to Xubuntu 12.10 networking broken, various programs gone

Asked by Jon Samuels

I upgraded to 12.10 this afternoon, and all seemed to install properly. I opted to remove the unnecessary programs after reboot because I didn't know how long I'd have until I had to leave the office for home (said it might take hours). But it seemed to be working, connected to the office wired network and wireless network.

Took it home, booted it up, and all seems to be going well now, except that, while it appears to be connecting to both my wireless and wired networks, it fails to find any hosts ("ping google.com" in the terminal returns "unknown host," for example, and cannot surf web in browser).

I tried to load up the additional drivers tool, but this now seems to be missing, along with maybe half of the programs under the "System" category in my application finder.

I'm currently running this via live USB 12.04, so I know it's something about the install. Even if I knew all of what I was missing, though, I'd have to download the sources, then install them all...and that's assuming I can tell all that's missing. Is there any way I can repeat the upgrade procedure without it being able to connect to the Internet? Am I missing something here?

To clarify, after rebooting after the install was done, I did sudo apt-get autoclean and sudo apt-get autoremove.

Can you open a terminal please (CTRL+ALT+T) and enter the following copy and paste all the output back here

--------------------------------------------------
sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; uname -a; sudo rfkill list; dmesg | grep -i firm

route -n; sudo iwlist scan; ping -c5 8.8.8.8; ping -c5 www.google.com
-------------------------------------------------

Open a web browser such as firefox enter http://173.194.66.147
Do you get the the google web page? if you search for something does it work then fail to find the page when you click the link?

This may help us work out what has gone wrong

Had to put all these in a text document on an SD card so I could copy-paste them, since I'm still only able to access the internet when booting from USB:

Usinge firefox to go to http://173.194.66.147:
Gets me to Google home page. Loads search results. Fails to load any search results when link is clicked.

Also, the first couple times I rebooted after upgrading, it would show the grub selector, for some reason, even though I only have one partition. Now it doesn't do that, just gives me a black screen, and I have to hit ESC to get it to load Xubuntu. Not sure what's up with that.

The problem is that for some reason you can't find a DNS server

Open a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) Enter this command I suggest you copy and paste so no typing errors

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee -a /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null

Reboot and try again. Should be fixed if not let us know what happens

Hi ,

can you post the results of

cat /etc/network/interfaces

Thanks

@Warren Hill: This did not solve the problem.

@NikTh: Here is the output of cat /etc/network/interfaces:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Try this

echo 'nameserver 8.8.8.8' | sudo tee -a /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head

sudo resolvconf -u

sudo service network-manager restart

Then give the result of

nslookup www.google.com

ping -c5 www.google.com

Thanks

So not sure what's still not working. Actually had grub pop up this last time, though. Still not sure why it would, since it never had in the past since I only have the one partition.

OK ,

lets undo what we did..

~$ sudo rm /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head

~$ sudo resolvconf -u

~$ sudo service network-manager restart

Do you know how to change a channel from your router ?
I consider that if you change the transmit channel then the connection will established.

Also give the results of

~$ cat /etc/hosts

Thanks

hi there!
i'm having exactly the same issue with (bootable usb) customized (through ubuntu-builder) versions of Xubuntu and Lubuntu (didn't remove any packages, just added texlive, octave, vim, geany and stuff like that).

don't know if this will help anyone find out what's happening, since my setup was not "vanilla" anymore, but this was my experience:

sony vaio, intel wireless, iwl3945
1) boot from usb, network adapters were recognized, but the network-manager didn't show available wireless networks
2) after a manual scan ( ~$ iwlist wlan0 scanning ) the available networks appeared in the network-manager
3) i didn't expect that, but thought it solved the problem and connected to my wireless network as usual.
4) www.google.com was unreachable (unknown host)
5) manually executed dhclient ( ~$ dhclient -4 -v wlan0)
6) problem was solved.
7) ???

i didn't try Xubuntu out-of-the-box, but unmodified Lubuntu had no issues connecting to the internet.

cheers

So I went for the nuclear option and re-installed Xubuntu 12.10 from USB...fortunately I keep things pretty well backed up.

I could still get Internet at work, so I think you're right about it being something with my connection settings, but unfortunately I don't know how to change a channel from the router, so I couldn't follow all your steps. Also, as I said, some of my programs were gone/broken, so reinstalling seems to have fixed things.

After reinstall, everything's in working order. Thanks for your help guys.
