wifi problems in 12.04 LTS

Asked by BusterD

since installing 12.04 LTS the wifi is performing a strange version of a Foxtrot - slow, slow, quick, quick, slow. At times its more like how I dance, slow, slow, stop, sit-down, very slow .........

I have an oldish ThinkPad T60 with the Ram upped to 3GiB and the wifi worked brilliantly until 12.04 LTS .............

I have tried numerous solutions from the support forums and nothing so far seems to work? At best my IT skills are basic but I do know how to run stuff in terminal, so no a complete numpty.

So please can someone help my laptop/wifi to dance like Fred Astaire ....................

Is this a fresh install or an upgrade? If fresh install was it 12.04 or 12.04.1

1. Can you connect with a LAN Cable and if so does it work OK?

2. With the LAN cable disconnected its it just the speed that's changing or are you constantly losing and re-finding your connection?

3. Can you open a terminal (you knew this bit was coming - didn't you); give us the output of the following please

sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; uname -a; sudo rfkill list; dmesg | grep -i firm; sudo iwlist scan

Lets try this in bits because I think something went wrong with the commands (typo possibly).

It looks like I have part of the dmesg command and it has not been filtered using grep

Cut and paste and send a separate reply to each of these lines

sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; uname -a; sudo rfkill list

dmesg | grep -i firm

sudo iwlist scan

OK.

I can't see anything obviously wrong here. Maybe someone else can.

In a terminal can you try

sudo iwlist scan

again but wait until its misbehaving. It may be that you are getting interference from other wifi routers at certain times because they are only switched on occasionally.

There was no interference when this scan was done.

Hi Mark - Sorry for the delayed response - I was dragged to my sister-in-laws all weekend to decorate her bathroom ........
I've now tried these and can now only connect via ethernet cable. I can see the router on wireless but won't connect to it even after it has asked for the encryption key .............. the wicd network manager is easy to understand but this too is looping when I try to connect ...... I can't understand any of the instructions and what they are doing to the laptop and the wifi configuration: any further tips, including using a large hammer, would be apprecialted ...

Thanks
