can not connect to internet 12.04 install

Asked by Bob

I have installed 12.04 in a Hp compaq dc7100 cmt. I get network disconnect .

I am unplugging the Lan cable (a wired router, comcast) from the old computer to the Hp.

it works on the old computer but not on the hp. dose a router know I'm changing from one computer to the other and something there stops it from connecting?

the old computer in the network connection, is set to Auto etho 00:11:11:E6:4F:FE
change it to that on the HP, but did not work.

the little lines on the icon are moving, when I unplug the lan the lines disappear

what am I missing here I don't know to much about this,

I don't know if there is something I need to do for the router or address can anyone help,

also in looking for answers I found Question #208776 looks like the same thing I'm having problem with.

Can you give me the output from the following please

sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; uname -a;
ifconfig; route -n

I found in system setting, then network, hardware address (00:16:35:78:47:BB)
in network connections this address is under Wired connection 1, Device MAC address 00:16:35:78:47:BB
I was trying to use, Auto etho (00:11:11:E6:4F:FE) the one that works on the older computer.
don't know if this will help but all info is good.

going crazy lol. I can not copy and paste for one computer to the other, I'm getting the spaces in the command line wrong,
can you retype it with (S) for the spaces, so I can see them and get it right tried a few time and I'm getting it wrong somewhere.

I suggest you use a USB flash drive to move from 1 pc to the other

(width: 64 bits) I see this on the top part, I loaded the 32 bit 12.04, should I change to the 64 bit and what is the deference? would like to know.

The 64-bit version will be faster with things that involve a lot of mathematical effort like simulations, video encoding etc. but for most users the advantage will be negligible. The downside to the 64-bit version it that not all hardware is supported yet as for the 64-bit OS, 64-bit drivers are needed. For open source drivers 64-bit is available but some propriety drivers are not available in 64-bit yet.

I'm sure everything will go 64-bit eventually but unless you have loads of memory or are running very mathematically intense applications I wouldn't change yet

I found the fix turn off modem and unplug the power cord. Wait a minute plug power back in. it's the modem this model needs to reset for other computers to work off it.
