Software Center shows that it was all installed but even after restarting the laptop its still giving me the missing firmware message.
when i re-enter the command this is the output.

[sudo] password for jswain1809:

b43-fwcutter is already the newest version.
firmware-b43-installer is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-3.2.0-29 linux-headers-3.2.0-29-generic-pae
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

When i use 'apt-get autoremove' i get this output

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

Do you have updates running or software centre open, if so then close them and retry.

you can clean up with:

sudo apt-get --purge autoremove

Please copy-paste the following commands into the Terminal (using a working, WIRED Internet connection):

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-lpphy-installer

Then please copy-paste each command below one by one into a Terminal. Hit <ENTER> after each command.

echo "blacklist bcma" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
echo "blacklist brcmsmac" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
echo "blacklist brcm80211" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

After running the commands above, make sure to select "Load Defaults" in the BIOS, save the configuration.

Then reboot and retest wireless.
