How do I restore my internet connection?

Asked by Christopher

I was having an issue with fglrx-update and managed to lose most of my desktop, including the dash, tray, desktop icons and the avant dock.

I rebooted into recovery mode and started with failsafe graphics. It restored my display drivers but broke my Internet connection. The connection manager shows both wired and wireless connections are working properly, but I can't access the Internet, FTP or mail. Oddly, Skype shows the connection as active and I can watch FreetuxTV. Also, I can update in recovery mode with networking enabled.

Please let me know where to begin. I have an active connection from another partition and a backup laptop.

If you run:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null

Then try the web, is it ok?
