wireless switch turned on but showing hard bloked: yes

Asked by Swaroop Chakraborty

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on Folio 13 1017 model and I'm facing a peculiar issue with the wireless. Although the physical button is turned blue(which means wireless is turned on), in my indicator menu, the line shows 'wireless is disabled by hardware switch' and 'wireless networks' link is greyed (unclickable).

I searched much and even tried the rfkill command which we generally use to unblock, it didn't work.

Please anyone suggest.

Regards,
swaroop

Do you dual boot the system?
Is there a switch to turn the wireless off and on?

Hi Andrew,

No, the laptop was shipped with Win7 on it, but I removed everything and installed only Ubuntu 12.04.

Yes, there is a switch which is showing turned on(glowing bluish white). If it was turned off, it should have shown a red glow light.

swaroop

Andrew, just to let you know that the Fn key (F12) which is used to turn wireless on/off isn't working in Ubuntu.

Check the bios settings some laptops, Dell for example, have settings for soft switches in the bios. If you can check the wireless is turned on in the bios and disable the switch

Hi,

I will definitely provide the required info, but I'm now stuck with another problem. I have VirtualBox installed and I wanted to share the 'Downloads' folder from my host OS. So, I had to install the samba. During installation, I received an error, but tried installing again, it got installed. And when i rebooted the machine, its showing me a message 'The system is running in low-graphics mode' and I am unable to get out of it. Please help.

Nick - once i get back to normal screen, I will provide the info. Sorry for the delay.

Regards,
swaroop

Please open a separate question for your problem with Virtualbox. By limiting each question to one problem its much cleaner for people trying to find solutions to their own problems. Also by asking a separate question about Virtualbox its more likely to be read by someone with more experience of Virtual box.

When you get back with answers to Nick's questions we will try to help you further with your network problems.

Hi ,

I think your problem listed somewhere in above messages.

Try these commands in terminal and tell me if WiFi awakened.

  - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

sudo modprobe -rvf hp-wmi

sudo rfkill unblock all

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

nmcli nm wifi on

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

If nothing happen after last command , then try again the switch (Fn+F?)
and wait 5-10 secs to see.

If nothing happens again , then give the results of

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
rfkill list all
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Thanks

Does it now work ok?

Thanks a ton Nick. It solved my problem. The wifi is turned on now.

Just one last query. I find the wireless is very slow when power cord connected. Is it because the power management is on then? If I turn the power management off, will it effect the connectivity? And will it effect the machine (I mean what would happen if I turn off the power management)?

Thanks again.

swaroop

Yes this can be corrected too:

Open a terminal and give this command

______________________________________________

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

_______________________________________________

it will open an empty document , copy-paste this inside

________________________________________

/options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1
________________________________________

save the document and reboot your PC .

Thanks

Correction :

WITHOUT the slash /

I will give again the commands here

1st ..

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

2nd...

at the empty opened window you add this line inside

options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1

Save the document and restart your PC.

Thanks

Hi Nick/Andrew,

The wireless and bluetooth options were enabled after I executed the commands given by Nick. Then I also run the iwlwifi command given by Nick. Saved it, restarted the PC, but found that the wireless is again turned off.

So, I ran the commands given by Andrew, but doesn't work.

What next to do?

Ok ,

Open a terminal and execute this command

echo 'blacklist hp-wmi' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

reboot your PC and see if problem solved.

Bad luck. The wireless is still turned off and it also took away my bluetooth indicator. Now my rfkill command only shows the wifi

swaroop@roobuntu:~$ rfkill list all
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
 Soft blocked: no
 Hard blocked: yes
swaroop@roobuntu:~$

Its not showing the bluetooth anymore.

In the meantime when the bluetooth and wireless were enabled, I tried transferring a file from PC to my HTC phone. So, I can say that the bluetooth was working fine.

Hey Nick, I noticed my wireless indicator turned red. That means the wifi is turned off physically. So, if I run the command given by you initially, will that work good? I tried enabling it by using Fn+F12 but the light didn't turn bluish white. So, its not working that way.

No problem , we can revert (undo) the last change ..

Do this now

Open terminal and give

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

find the line we added before : (it will be in the end)

blacklist hp-wmi

and delete it.

Then save the document and reboot again .

Post back here the the results of

rfkill list all

Hi ,

first of all remove the one iwlwifi...conf . Not needed both..

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

Then try again the commands I gave you before.. and see if WiFi turned on ..

sudo modprobe -rf hp-wmi

sudo rfkill unblock all

sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

nmcli nm wifi on

--------------------------------------------------------

IF and ONLY IF wifi turned ON with above commands , then do as follows.

Run in terminal

gksudo gedit /etc/rc.local

and BEFORE the line exit 0

add bellow lines with this order

(sleep 5 ; modprobe -rf hp-wmi) &
(sleep 7 ; rfkill unblock all) &
(sleep 9 ; ifconfig wlan0 up) &
(sleep 11 ; modprobe hp-wmi) &

Save the document and reboot again to see if Wireless works.

The wifi and bluetooth were turned on by the commands. So, I added the lines and then rebooted. Just when I logged in by providing the profile password, the system showed me a notification "Wifi networks available. Choose a network from the menu". But before I could click and expand the menu to check wifi networks, the bluetooth and wifi got disabled and its now showing that its wifi and bluetooth are disabled by hardware switch.

Just asking, is it a possibility that I am running the commands with my dongle connected. So, things are happening temporarily and getting cleared off when restarted?

The commands we added in rc.local executed at the startup of the system.

Reboot WITHOUT the dongle attached and we will see.

No, the dongle isn't affecting the status. I removed it, the system notified me I'm offline. Rebooted, it showed me the same message - Wifi network available, but things are disabled.

Ok ,

Lets change the lines inside rc.local a little ..

Open the file with

gksudo gedit /etc/rc.local

the lines we added before are these

(sleep 5 ; modprobe -rf hp-wmi) &
(sleep 7 ; rfkill unblock all) &
(sleep 9 ; ifconfig wlan0 up) &
(sleep 11 ; modprobe hp-wmi) &

add one more line between sleep 9 and sleep 11 and we change the time too .. make the lines like this

(sleep 5 ; modprobe -rf hp-wmi) &
(sleep 7 ; rfkill unblock all) &
(sleep 9 ; ifconfig wlan0 up) &
(sleep 11; nmcli nm wifi on) &
(sleep 30 ; modprobe hp-wmi) &

save the document and reboot Without the Dongle.

Thanks

Outstanding!! The wireless and bluetooth were enabled for about few seconds and I could expand the menu to see they are actually enabled and also it listed two wireless networks that I have in range.

The line ARE permanent .

Something is not right with the time.. sleep..

Now try to remove one line..

Open again ..

gksudo /etc/rc.local

and remove the line

(sleep 30 ; modprobe hp-wmi) &

I think is the last line (before exit 0 ) ..

reboot again and hopefully will work.

Thanks

Great!! its working now. Both wifi and bluetooth are enabled now. Thanks a lot for prompt support.

When I restarted and tried to connect with the dongle, it wasn't connecting. So I restarted the networking service and it worked. I have wifi at workplace, so I'll check the status there tomorrow and let you know if its working fine.

Its almost 4am in the morning and I should go to sleep now..:D . What time is it at your place?

Thanks Nick. The wifi is working now. I just came to office and checked. Hope the connection remain consistent. If not, you are always there to solve the issue I'm sure...:)

Take care.
