Wireless Network controller [0280]: Ralink corp. RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe [1814:3090] can detect but cannot connect to wireless networks in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS using ASUS CM-6870

Asked by AllenWeber on 2012-09-10

Thank you in advance for your help!

*** First I tested: ***
I used Wubi to install 12.04 on an ASUS Cm-6870. After installing with Wubi (on SDA), my wireless modem worked flawlessly in Ubuntu 12.04

I then removed the wubi installation.

I used the Live CD to test again and the wifi modem worked perfectly.

*** Actual Install ***
I then installed 12.04 using the LiveCD on a Western Digital HDD I installed on my computer. I installed using the wireless modem.

*** Problem ***

After rebooting from the installation, my wireless card/modem no longer worked under the new Ubuntu 12.04 installation.

When I try to connect using the wirelss I see the system searching for a connection.
After a while it tells me "Wireless Network Disconnected"

I then booted using the LiveCD I had used for the install.
And now the wireless would not work with the LiveCD.

*** Wifi under Widnows Not Effected ***

I tested the Wifi modem using my Windows installation to see if it still worked there.
Booted up under windows)
It still worked under windows 7.
So I know the card works.

Searching the net about my problem I found
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure

I copied and pasted the command on Step 2 into Terminal.

Here is my output

Hi ,

so your problem is that you cannot connect to the network . I can see that your wireless worsk (scans networks) but you cannot connected.

If I am right , try this

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/rt2800pci.conf
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

inside the empty document add bellow

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
options rt2800pci nohwcrypt=1
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

save the document and reboot .

Thanks

Thank you NikTh,

Your assessment is correct. The wireless works. In Ubuntu it will see the network, but will not connect.
In windows it will connect.

I'm not a very technical person. I am just good with cut and paste commands :)

Doing this will have no impact on the windows system. Is that correct?

Two questions about the command

1. So just cut
options rt2800pci nohwcrypt=1
and paste it into the last empty line

2. Where do I save the document, and save it as what?

Since I am not technical, I just want to make sure I am doing what I will do correctly.

Thanks for your patience.

N1ck 7h0m4d4k15 (nicktux) said : #3

Hi ,

no it will not impact the Windows wireless functionallity.

First you must open an empty document

with this command in terminal
copy-paste it from here to terminal.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/rt2800pci.conf
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

then place inside this line :
________________________________
options rt2800pci nohwcrypt=1
________________________________

then save the document and restart your PC and try again to connect.

Thanks

AllenWeber (allenlweber) said : #4

What extension do I save the document?

txt?

Also, do I save the document in my Root folder?
Home Folder?

Or is there another folder to save it in?

Thanks!

AllenWeber (allenlweber) said : #5

Adding...

I'm kind of stupid in that way.

If I understand this correctly:

1. Use Text Editor and create a new document.
1. Open a Terminal Window
2. Copy and paste

 gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/rt2800pci.conf

Into the terminal

3. Then paste
options rt2800pci nohwcrypt=1
into the document I created with Text Editor along with the output from the command above?

4. Save the new document [where] ? with an extension [what]?

Probably you are laughing at how stupid my questions seem to you, (I would be if I knew how to do it :) ), but right now I am totally confused.

Thank you NikTh for your patience with me.

Hi ,

just follow the instructions here :

1. Open a terminal with Ctrl+alt+t combo keys.

2. Paste in terminal this command : gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/rt2800pci.conf

3. Paste in the empty document this line : options rt2800pci nohwcrypt=1

4. Click Save . Nothing else. Not save as , or save where.. just save and Close the document (x)

5. Reboot your system.

The extension of the document and where will be saved are already given . Look the 2nd instruction here.
The document will have for extension .conf and the place will be saved is /etc/modprobe.d/
The name of the document will be rt2800pci.conf

Not need to do anything but follow the instructions above. step by step.

Thanks

AllenWeber (allenlweber) said : #7

Hi NikTh,

Your instructions worked perfectly!

I now have wifi on Ubuntu.

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

Thanks NikTh, that solved my question.
