when pinging local ip is being routed via internet.

Asked by Om Prakash Singh

Hi All,

I have configured on interface eth0 with ip 192.168.x.x, but when I am trying to ping to this IP I am being routed via internet. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and have also configured bind9, which is also taking time. Is it happening because of the forwarders I am using in the DNS.

192.168.x.x is a Class C and none routable IP so will not go out onto the web. It will traverse the router but will not go out to the web. Are you pinging the IP from within your own network?

yes, i am.

Its is not going out but my machine while knows that the interface is local it is getting pinged from my ISP GW, i wonder why it is doing so. Also making any query to the DNS (which I have setup now) is taking a lot of time to respond, it gives me the correct ip.

Sorry, for the wrong question, i have wrongly configured my interface ip address, thats why it is going over the ISP to check and ping my address. once set up correctly for the interface this whole thing is working fine. Thanks for your support guys.
