phy0 -> rt2500usb_set_device_state: Error - Device failed to enter state 3 (-16). -> Linksys WUSB54G v4 802.11g Adapter [Ralink RT2500USB] 13b1:000d not working on Dell Dimension 4700 in Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
I recently upgraded 10.04 to 12.04 on my desktop computer and my Linksys wireless network adapter stopped working. I was running the WUSB54Gv4 on 10.04 with ndiswapper and using the ralink rt2500usb driver and it worked just fine.
Right after the upgrade the internet connection wasnt showing a wireless option, so i added the rt2500usb driver to /etc/modules
The wireless connection showed up and i could connect to my home network. But when I started browsing the connection suddenly stopped and it seems that no data is being send in any direction. The wireless status still shows as connected to my router.
Any ideas? Please help.

Can you give the output of:
sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; uname -a; sudo rfkill list; dmesg | grep -i firm
and
sudo iwlist scan
Also do you dual boot the system?
Thanks

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

OK you can see wireless networks so it looks like your hardware is OK
Do you know which of the 3 Cells you can see is yours? The ESSID is the name of your router.

OK you do have internet access so its probably just the name server that is not working
to test this try opening a web browser and in the address bar enter the following IP address
212.58.246.90
This should take you to the bbc web site. If it does not let me know what happens
If it does try the following
echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null

Ok, so the bbc website loaded just fine, at least the main page. But then I started browsing on the different articles of the site and the pages just stop loading. If I keep refreshing the page it will eventually load, but id does take quite a while.
I did the command and nothing happened.
I may also add that I currently have 2 laptops connected on the same wireless network. One is using ubuntu 10.04 and the other win7 and they both work well. So that might discard being a wifi router/repeater malfunction.

already tried that. I do get web access, but connection suddenly stops and stalls. My network status also shows as connected.

This may not be relevant but looking at your routers
Cell 01 - Address: 00:90:D0:FC:32:11
Cell 02 - Address: 04:C0:6F:2F:67:F4
Cell 03 - Address: 54:A5:1B:D4:BD:38
Cell 1 and Cell 3 could be fighting each other try turning one of them off see if it makes any difference. If it does you could change one of them to channel 1. There will be a web page on the router to do that.

Warren,
Actually I unplugged Cell 03 a while ago just to make sure it wasn't creating some kind of interference, but it did not make any difference. I also changed ESSID channel to 1, but also get the same result.
actionparsnip,
I just did as you instructed and the problem persists. Any other idea?

Thanks Mark,
apparently this command,
iwconfig wlan0 power off
fixes the problem. I have been browsing with no problems at all. Now, is there a way I don't have to input the command at the terminal every time I reboot?
Again, thank you.

Its certainly possible to set up a script to run at start-up.
I can't remember all the deatils, pergaps someone else can. If noboby else has answered by the time I get home tonight. I'll check it out and let you know how to do it.
