How to connect two systems using a ethernet cross cable

Hai sir very much interest in using ubuntu
I am student my problem is i would like to connect to systems one is desktop(ubuntu 11.04) another one is dell laptop(ubuntu 12.04LTS) using cross cable
so please tell me what are the requirements and tell me the procedure and also browse net to solve this problem but i didn't find any solution so please help me

If you can ping between the 2 systems then there is a connection.

yes it ping sir but it says network not established

No i want that to run a web application on desktop using tomcat webserver
and request it in laptop for that i want to connect it

Then thats fine, if you can ping the other system hosting the service then connect it from the remote system and it will connect. Use the same URL you test with on the localhost but change the word localhost for the system's hostname
