"Secrets" Window pops up after trying to connect to Home Network(linksys)

Asked by ramair

In addition, my computer won't connect to comcast modem & router (WPA/WP2) I typed in encryption key on bottom of modem/router into the WPA/WPA2 key in network management. The linksys is a BEFW1154 and says doesn't support WPA2 but it changes when I try to connect to both, so I just type in that encryption key into the key in network management.

Everytime I try to connect to the comcast modem/router it says its connected but then I pull up a browser and there is no internet(wierd) So yesterday I tried to connect to home network through an older linksys. It worked fine. But today I tried to connect through linksys and I get this "secrets" dialog box that pulls up and I have no idea what to type in it except the encryption key..?

I had zero problems before with connectivity to linux. Then I get this comcast box and all of a sudden linux isn't configured for it or something went wrong. I thought it was the comcast hardware since i could easily connect with the linksys. But now I can't get either? I'm using another computer right now. I use kubuntu. I call the comcast tech for routers/modems and she said in the past 5 years she has had only 1 other linux user call in making me 2. She thought it might be because linux doesn't support WPA2. She said they have no support for linux and I said that was sad. But I usually have zero problems with linux and if I do I can find answers quickly on google and fix them... I feel awkward on this one.

Thanks

If you remove all wireless networks in the network manager, then reboot can you connect ok?

I have to click "Home Network" to connect to a network. Then it asks to enter key for Hex for WEP.... However, the OK button to apply is not highlighted and I cannot click on it. So I change from HEX to Passphrase (for 128 bit) then type in the same 16 digit key, then the ok button is highlighted, so I click ok. Also, I have no option for WPA/WPA2 just WEP. I cannot connect.

It just is at halfway point the network icon at setting up network address. Then it has a red line through it, so I cannot connect.

On the left side of network manager there is "Wlan Interface" Something that doesn't look right is it says "no ip" and "no mac address" Shouldn't it say I have an IP?

What about just reinstalling the network manager? Or is it too early for that? And maybe someone could tell me why it worked and then all of a sudden stopped working....? Its odd all of a sudden it would just stop working out of the blue.

The phone call with comcast I changed use proxy system to no proxy. I just changed it back. What is your proxy set at? That didn't work though changing it back. I also did this;

I wired the ethernet cord from the other computer to my laptop thinking I would get a connection that way. The ethernet wired cord doesn't work either. It says I'm connected but doesn't load an internet page for the life of it... This is bizarre. I'm thinking its this new router/modem that doesn't work with linux even though it did for awhile?>?

I'm on the phone now with comcast..... Either it's their network and modem/router that doesn't support linux or linux spontaneously failed...

I'm wondering if 12.04 supports wpa2?

Ok, So on my other linux laptop a different version of kubuntu is on there. However, that doesn't connect to the network either. And it doesn't connect to 12.04 either on this newer laptop.

I'm thinking its the hardware... But if someone who actually knows a lot about computers and networks take this one that would be best. I have gone as far as I've can. I was thinking of uninstalling and re-installing this OS but when the network manager or connection also doesn't work on my old laptop with an older kubuntu version it doesn't make sense it would be the operating system or network manager.

Either linux is not up date date or I have to type in some fix in some config or it must be the new hardware...

It's either linux isn't keeping up with the new WPA2 encryption security,Faster modem speeds at 50megabytes/sec, newer hardware....

or

It must be the new hardware/comcast/network not compatible with linux and kubuntu.

I'm not the expert but I conclude:

It's the hardware not compatible with linux.

Ok so, He reset on his end the who modem/router with new MAC I think-But he reset the router/modem on his end. Now once I connect the ethernet cable hard wired to my laptop, I do get a very fast internet. However, I cannot get wifi with this modem/router still. Why does the modem/router work when hard wired but not work as wifi.

I still conclude it's the comcast modem/router.

ok, So from here>>

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/204757

It looks like a driver issue. Now strangely, I go to system> additional drivers..

Then this broadcom is picked up.... Funny its a driver called.... Broadcom STA wireless driver...

Pulling up the info before:

product: BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller
       vendor: Broadcom Corporation

The problem is the BCM4313 driver it appears.

Here is something but I cannot find the fail portion... Let me know if this makes sense?

Well ok for now and maybe for good both are working. I basically needed to unscrew the coaxial cable to reset it. I don't understand how pulling out the specific cable resets the modem. Can someone explain?

No, it stopped working again... It worked for a short time... What does this type of works sporadically connection mean?

Just to get wired, I had to reset the modem, then wired worked.

Here are some sources.....

It says for my driver that BCM4131 14e4:4727 is not supported... It looks like the STA proprietary driver on this documentation was for Natty.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#b43%20-%20Internet%20access

This is a link that talks about firmware:

http://www.linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/brcm80211

Here is some more about drivers...

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#b43%20-%20Internet%20access

Thing thing is when I go to system>additional drivers>

It has broadcom STA wireless driver

And its installed and it works for BCM4313

So why isn't my computer connecting wirelessly?

ok---

If I want internet I have to reset my modem every time. If I close my laptop and open it won't re-connect and then I have to reset my modem yet again.

"It's the hardware not compatible with linux."

"I still conclude it's the comcast modem/router."

My conclusion was correct since we tested it. I had comcast come out to switch in an older modem and separate router. And guess what, it worked. It was easy too. It wasn't my laptop or linux, so

Conclusion: It must be and was/is the router/modem.

I was then told other people were having buggy problems with dropping connections with this < 1 year old router/modem Gateway Xfinity box from Comcast.

Problem Solved.

Return.... or stay away....... from the Xfinity Gateway modem and router.
