A Ubuntu machine with WinXP in the Vbox?

I assume you've no connection issues with Ubuntu, so what does your Vbox menu Devices - > Network report?
You have Enable Network Adapter checked, and selected NAY for Attached to:
You'll also need to run the Network Wizard in the Vbox WinXP to setup your Local Area Connection.

There's the great Vbox online manual at
https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/UserManual.html
You might want to check out Chapter 6. Virtual networking
You'll also probably want to install the Guest Additions package if you haven't already done so, if you want to share data between the Vbox and Ubuntu.
