12.04 and Wireless

Asked by d.ender@yahoo.com

I do not recall when exactly but recently, I have noticed when I click on the wireless connection icon(top right corner on panel next to sound, date, time, user), I am connected to my home hub but when I click the bottom for 'connection information' to check my internet speed and whatnot, I receive an error saying there is no valid connection. Also, when I click ''edit'', every single box for any type of internet connection's are empty. There is nothing under the wireless tab even though I am connected to my home hub wifi. I don't understand - very confusing and frustrating. I am unable to check my internet usage or speed. This didn't happen before. I can remember it happening after an update but don't know which one to be precise.

Please, how can I fix this?

Thank you

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; uname -a; sudo rfkill list

Do you dual boot the system too?

Thanks

And no I don't dual boot. That means more than one OS on hdd, right?

This happened when I reverted from gnome-shell back to unity on fresh 12.04 install. Everything was working just fine, after an upgrade/update I could no longer get the info from clicking on the top right wifi icon for 'connection information' and in the 'edit connections' also is completely empty. Even though I do have a wifi connection - there's nothing in the box's.

Also I found I could go into 'network' using 'Dash Home' and see my wifi connection speed and all. I really do want this fixed. It's a bit frustrating and I would anything to avoid a format, because installing 12.04 on my system was hard and a bit tricky!

The wireless has an IP. If you run:

echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null

Do you get web access ok?

typing all that up there: echo "nameserver 8.8.8.8" | sudo tee /etc/resolv.conf > /dev/null

does absolutely nothing in my terminal besides asking for my password. Yes I connect to the internet. Connecting is not the issue, bringing up my connections and informations is what the problem is. Sometimes I click and click and nothing happens. I have internet connecting, just the software so I can 'manage' and 'edit' does not work/respond.

IP address: 172.20.10.9 (I am currently using my iPhone).

Try installing wicd and uninstall network manager, it may work nicer for you

Hello,
Just letting you know I ended up formatting. I stupidly uninstalled the network-manager in attempt to re-installing in order to fix the problem. Little did I know I would have completely crippled my chances of gaining internet access. Tried my best to reinstalling it using CD Rom and files from a USB stick but all was at a fail.

Did fresh format and that has fixed my problem completely.

Thank you for your help, sorry if I had been an inconvenience.
