Asked by Rob Pearson

The wireless does not work. 12.04 installed onto HD, clean install, only has ubntu-restricted-extras. HP Pavillion dv1000

The wireless light does not illuminate on the keyboard, there are no additional drivers listed. The following is from the command listed at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure/

NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'wpa|icd|etwork'; sudo lsmod

No it is not a dual boot, just 12.04.

Your Terminal output shows the following issue:

2: phy0: Wireless LAN

17.200590] ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
[ 17.742561] ipw2200: Radio Frequency Kill Switch is On:
[ 17.742563] Kill switch must be turned off for wireless networking to work.

[main]
NetworkingEnabled=true
WirelessEnabled=false
WWANEnabled=true
WimaxEnabled=true

So your wireless card is probably disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a COMBINATION of these factors...
There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"
Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....
Then reboot and retest wireless.

Also run the following Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset after rebooting:

rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill unblock all

Then retest wireless.

Thanks for your help, the wireless wasn't disabled in the BIOS, the wireless key above the normal keyboard just wouldn't illuminate. I did a BIOS reset, it was still indicating wireless enabled in BIOS. Then powered up again. I forgot to try the wireless and I did rfkill unblock all, and sudo rfkill unblock all, I connected OK. After a reboot it is OK still without rfkill.

So I am guessing that the BIOS reset fixed it. I have another 100% identical laptop, I'll check that one out later today and report back and then mark as solved.

Again, thanks for you time.

A second identical laptop worked OK, so it must have been the BIOS reset.
Thanks for your help
