Cannot get Ubuntu 12.04 to recognise integrated Ralink 3290 wireless controller

Asked by Sean Clarke

Hi,
    a have a new Novatech nFinity laptop and it is not recognising the integrated Ralink 3290 wireless controller, my understanding of this chipset is that it should be supported.

Here is my output if it helps

Hi,
    i posted my output under that question and they asked me to open a new one.

I don't see the rt3290pci driver on my system and today I went to the Ralink website and downloaded and built the 3290sta driver. I can manually run modprobe on this and the interface appears in ifconfig -a. i then need to manual bring it up (ifconfig ra0 up) and it appears under a normal "ifconfig" listing, but the network manager does not pick it up and it does not appear as an available interface in the networking widget on the top bar.

I have restarted the networking daemons (/etc/ini.d/networking restart) and still it does not appear - also on a reboot I still need to run the modprobe to get the ra0 interface to appear (I have added a rt3290 entry to /etc/modules).

you can add the modprobe command in /etc/rc.local above the exit 0 line, and it will run as root every boot

Hi Andrew,

I indeed asked Sean to create this new thread.

The other thread

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-nettool/+question/201443

was created by Tim Walsh. I wanted to keep the other thread clean.

Regards,

Mark

@Sean:

I see in the following Terminal output that you are using NetworkManager (which is indeed standard in Ubuntu)

root 837 0.0 0.1 237716 5312 ? Ssl 22:52 0:00 NetworkManager
root 1478 0.0 0.0 7256 1552 ? S 22:52 0:00 /sbin/dhclient -d -4 -sf /usr/lib/NetworkManager/nm-dhcp-client.action -pf /var/run/sendsigs.omit.d/network-manager.dhclient-eth0.pid -lf /var/lib/dhcp/dhclient-c57f663f-7d13-4cdb-ae26-e04a22a6575e-eth0.lease -cf /var/run/nm-dhclient-eth0.conf eth0

However, NetworkManager (often) does not like using any interface name other than wlan0. To circumvent that problem, I suggest installing wicd as a replacement for NetworkManager.

Then reboot. Then set ra0 as wireless interface name in wicd network manager.

Then retest wireless.

@Sean:

in the unpacked drivers open os/linux/config.mk and set:

# Support Wpa_Supplicant
HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y

# Support Native WpaSupplicant for Network Manager
HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y

Recompile and reinstall drivers with "sudo make && sudo make install". After that reboot.
ra0 should now be picked up by NetworkManager.

Regards,

Felix

@Sean:

strange, worked for me. I built a dkms Package from the official Ralink driver.
If you want you can give it try: http://ubuntu.cirrus7.com/rt3290-dkms_0.1cirrus7_all.deb

ra0 gets picked up by NetworkManager - at least for me

hi,all ,I have solved it with linux kernel driver rt2800pci,and all seems work well.what i do is:
git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linville/wireless-testing.git
This kernel have been patched rt3290 driver,so you can compile the" driver/net/wireless/rt2x00" ,and replace your "lib/module/`uname -r `/kernel/driver/net/wireless/rt2x00 " modules, next,
git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dwmw2/linux-firmware.git
,and copy the rt3290.bin to your "/lib/firmware",Then shutdown .

Note:my kernel is linux-image-3.2.0-3-686-pae,when I compile the rt2800pci ,I encounter few problems,all is about some undefined symbol,you can compare with your own kernel source,and mark or substitute with your own kernel code.
good luck
