Hi, the output is:

lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

                    Channel:2
                    Frequency:2.417 GHz (Channel 2)

Hope that helps and thanks.

Do you dual boot the system?

Yes windows XP one partition, Ubuntu 10.04lts on the other. I moqstly use Ubuntu, and am a Linux newby! Wireless works fine on Windows, used to on Ubuntu 9.10 fro years then I did an upgrade to 10.04 LTS recently. It seemed to work at first then after several updates through update manager it suddenly stopped. Hope that helps you?

Hello actionparsnip, I am providing some more information which I think may be relevant. I have a Fon router attached to my Netgear wireless router, to provide more range with an outside aerial (for my wife in the garden!).

I just disconnected it and this is the answer I now get from:

sudo iwlist scan | grep Channel

lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

So no mention of Channel:2 etc? I do hope that will be helpful.

Thanks again.

Sorry to add more. The wireless network I have is recognised but when I try and connect it just drops out. During the connection cycle I tried;

sudo iwlist scan | grep Channel

again, and this timer I got the answer:

lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

                    Channel:6
                    Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6)

So it is seeing the wifi, I guess???

 Thanks

Try blacklisting the rt2860sta module. That's the old vendor module which was replaced by the rt2800pci in 12.04.
In directory /etc/modules.d, edit the file blacklist.conf and add the line:
blacklist rt2860sta
and reboot
cd /etc/modules.d
gksudo gedit blacklist.conf
   blacklist rt2860sta

Ubfan, thank you for that, BUT, I don't have an /etc/modules.d. at all.

I find this file blacklist.conf in /etc/modprobe.d?

I tried editing it adding the

blacklist rt2860sta as you suggest, saving and rebooting. No difference I'm afraid. My wireless network shows up but fails to connect after a minute or so of trying I get the message "Wireless network disconnected"

I do find a a file /etc/modules with this contents:

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

lp

The only modules.d I can find at all is an empty directory in /usr/share/initramfs-tools.

Any other ideas please? Thanks

Make it easier with:

echo "blacklist rt2860sta" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf > /dev/null

No need for gedit, the commnd will also work in any DE, and any distribution of Linux :)

Thanks for that actionpasnip. Blacklisting rt2860sta does not work with my eeepc 1000H and 10.04lts. So I tried a different tack:

I enabled rt2860sta again and BLACKLISTED rt2800pci. Then I rebooted.

It worked perfectly.

My wireless is now up and running just fine as before. As a complete newbie to linux and Ubuntu I have no idea what problems that might cause down the line ?? But I'm happy to have my wireless back again for now.

So it looks as if someone will have to look at rt2800pci and solve the problem for others who must have the same problem as me.

Thanks to both you and Ubfan for you time and suggestions which is much appreciated.

Tim.
