incorrect configuration in /etc/network/interfaces file + conflict between wicd and NetworkManager -> Wireless Network controller [0200]: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88w8335 [Libertas] 802.11b/g Wireless [11ab:1faa] (rev 03) not working on Dell Dimension 9100 in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Asked by Pubroa circularJohn Gevrekakis on 2012-06-02

Before upgrading from Ubuntu 11.10, my wireless connection would automatically connect. Now ,there is no network manager applet showing a wireless connection initiating on 12.04. All drivers are installed. I can connect to the wireless with the following commands:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
sudo iwconfig wlan0 power on

Here is the troubleshooting output from my Dell Dimension 9100 desktop:

You have chosen to disable the use of NetworkManager by choosing to put the following info in your /etc/network/interfaces file:

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
    wpa-ssid PatriotLan
   wpa-psk 0pcRM1S8xYpY8Fh66LSaGi

If you want to use NetWorkManager, then I believe the /etc/network/interfaces file should only contain these 2 lines, nothing more:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

I believe you should also delete any configuration lines containing the following in any of the configuration files located in the /etc/modprobe.d directory:

alias wlan0 ndiswrapper

There is another issue as well.

See the output below:

root 1178 0.0 0.3 25876 7248 ? S 18:40 0:00 /usr/bin/python -O /usr/share/wicd/daemon/wicd-daemon.py
root 1289 0.0 0.3 15264 7868 ? S 18:40 0:00 /usr/bin/python -O /usr/share/wicd/daemon/monitor.py

You say you want to use NetworkManager, but wicd is running in the background. So you need to choose: either you uninstall wicd, or you use wicd to connect wirelessly instead of NetworkManager. You cannot use both tools at the same time....

Awesome ! Fixed everything with my wireless issues
