Wireless Network controller [0280]: Ralink corp. RT2561/RT61 rev B 802.11g [1814:0302] can detect, but cannot connect to wireless networks - using ASUSTeK M2N-MX SE Plus in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
With Ubuntu 10.4 I had a good wireless connection. It was always established by the time I logged in. After upgrading to 12.4 I find that all attempts at connection fail. After trying to make the connection for a while, it gives up with a "Authentication required by wireless network" pop-up. It doesn't matter how many times I try, A connection is never made.
So I decided to make a clean install of 12.4, but the same problem showed up. Next I did a clean install of 10.4 and surprise, the wireless network behaved as expected. I tried doing an upgrade again and once more, no wireless network.
The same computer also will not run with Unity although it ran with full graphic effects under 10.4. It does run OK with Unity 2D. This is an inconvenience rather than the show stopper that the wireless problem is. It's something that I'll follow up on after sorting the network.
I tried enabling broadcasting and disabling MAC filtering on the wireless router, but it made no difference. Any idea where I should start with the wireless network problem?

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

Most of the apt-get update scrolled out of the terminal window, but I have included the tail end of it.

The newest mainline kernels for Ubuntu can be found here:
http://
Install the *all.deb file and the generic i386.deb files, NOT the generic-pae files and NOT the *amd64.deb files.
After installing the .deb files, reboot and retest wireless using mainline kernel version v3.4-rc6-precise

Unfortunately it has created a new problem in that I no longer have any means of editing Japanese texts. Under System settings > Language Support > Install/Remove Languages, English is shown as installed, but there are no other languages available. This is as big a show stopper as having no network, perhaps bigger. At least with no network I was still able to edit Japanese text via USB memory stick
What do I need to do to restore Language support?

You can boot into a previous Ubuntu kernel via the grub2 boot menu.
More info about getting to the boot menu, is mentioned here:

I forgot to mention that a use of this computer is on-line editing of web content with Japanese text. So your solution is not at all practical (Wireless networking OR Japanese support).
If it was only off-line editing, and I was the only user, then I could possibly live with rebooting 10 - 20 times per day and enabling/disabling the wireless network each time, but this is not the case.
Any other suggestions?

Hmm. Never mind. Booted computer for 9th time today and Language support has returned! Successfully added Japanese and tested. (double check to ensure using Kernel v3.4-rc6-precise: yes)
Thanks
