Wireless network connection drops out or bounces

Asked by Simon

My wireless connection has taken to bouncing. It was fine (except that I was turning off power management each time I started up to solve a similar problem) and there weren't any updates done to trigger the issue. Oddly it has been quite stable now for nearly 2 hours.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on an Acer Aspire 5742. Below is output from commands asked for in Wireless Troubleshooting procedure:

Have you tried Precise, the newer drivers and kernel may support your hardware better....

I'm sorry, but what do you mean by Precise?

OK thanks. so that means a complete upgrade? Any risk something else will break?
Thanks for your help.

No, just run the liveCD, see how it goes.

Now it has been stable for about 18 hours! (i.e. without doing anything). This makes it tricky to know if Precise will make a difference.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Simon for more information if necessary.
