Firefox- can't find server, Evolution- error while fetching mail

Asked by Mike K

I have communication problems.
On loading Firefox I find that it has defaulted to offline mode. Selecting online gives "Server not found. Firefox can't find the server at www.xxxxxx etc."

Similarly, Evolution has defaulted to offline when the program starts and putting online gives "error while fetching mail".

This is not a hardware problem. I have hard disks in plug-in trays and there are no problems when I change sda1 (the root directory) for another disk with Linux installed on it. Neither is it the result of adding or updating a program. I was editing photos with GIMP, wanted to check something of the Internet, and encountered the problems described.

Ubuntu 8.04
Evolution 2.22.3.1
Firefox 3.6.17

If nothing works, it's most likely a problem with your isp. Call it up to see whatt's going on.

Hardy is no longer supported in any way on the desktop. You should upgrade. I suggest a clean install of Oneiric or if you are brave but want an easier time after April, install Precise.

Marcus,

Thanks for your reply but I don't think that there is any problem with
the ISP. As I wrote, I can change the hard disk for another with Ubuntu
installed and everything is OK. I was able to post to answers.launchpad
and send this e-mail. It seems to me that some file on my regular
Ubuntu installation has become corrupted.

Regards,
Mike

Andrew,

Perhaps 8.04LTS is no longer supported, but there is no reason e-mail
and web access should break when I am working with GIMP.

Maybe true but 'not supported' means no updates, no support here or in the official support IRC channels.

I have fixed this myself - the idiot's way. I reinstalled Ubuntu, but I had hoped that there would have been a more elegant solution.

Unsupported? I still receive updates.

Thanks to all who replied.

You will get the updates which will go on the server, like new kernels and services but desktop apps will not be updated as Hardy is EOL on the desktop. I hope you reinstalled a newer release

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Your question if translated to Windows would be:

Hi my Windows 98 system is having issues..blah...blah

Its an old unsupported release and you would naturally advise an upgrade. Same deal

Andrew,

This is not really the place for personal opinions but, OK.
My problem had nothing to do with the age of the OS.
I like this version of Ubuntu and shall stick with it until it becomes
unusable because I do not like the direction in which Canonical is
going. I do not want my desktop computer to look like a mobile
telephone. Looking at the trends on DistroWatch and it would seem that
I am not alone in this opinion. Time to move to another distribution?
And, on the few occasions when I am obliged to use Windows it is Windows
2000 Pro :-)

Regards,
Mike

The Hardy release of Ubuntu is dead, no more support. It is EOL. Its not an opinion, its how the OS and it's support works.
