do you have a switch to enable and disable wireless? if so, press it and wait a few seconds to see if you can then connect. If not, run:
sudo rfkill unblock all
then retry.
Those junky centrino wirelesses frequently need the N speed disabling under Linux to prevent frequent connection drops. As long as your internet connection speed is slower than 54Mb you will notice zero difference.
| Ernesto Lana (netolana) said : | #3 |
There is a hardware key to activate the wireless, it's on.
Applying the <sudo rfkill unblock all> makes no difference
sudo rmmod iwlagn
sudo modprobe iwlagn 11n_disable=1
Does that help?
| Ernesto Lana (netolana) said : | #5 |
Didn't work
When I attempt to activate the wireless connection (at the right top corner), the wireless LED turns on but then immediately goes off again
| Ernesto Lana (netolana) said : | #6 |
I think I'll try using the ndisgtk, but I can't find the wireless .inf file
the driver is in the default OS so you don't need ndiswrapper. the hardware is being disabled by rfkill (did you even read your own output?)
if you unload then reload the module then run:
dmesg | tail
what is output?
| Ernesto Lana (netolana) said : | #8 |
The output of dmesg | tail is:
[ 24.571738] Bluetooth: RFCOMM ver 1.11

Your Terminal output shows the following issue:
1: acer-wireless: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
Please copy-paste the following command into the Terminal and then press
<ENTER>:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
Using the gedit editor, please ADD the following configuration line into
the file /etc/modprobe.
blacklist acer_wmi
Using the gedit editor, SAVE the change to the
/etc/modprobe.
Then REBOOT and retest wireless. This blacklist operation should make
the change permanent, even after rebooting.
This should force the Linux kernel to stop loading the acer_wmi module,
which is probably causing the kernel to soft block your wireless adapter.
The acer-wireless interface is an invalid wireless interface on your
computer, because you are using a Sony Vaio laptop , not an
ACER computer.
Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset:
rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill unblock all
Then retest wireless again.
| Ernesto Lana (netolana) said : | #10 |
It worked! Now I'm writing this using the wireless connection. Thanks Mark and Andrew for your time and help.
| Ernesto Lana (netolana) said : | #11 |
Thanks Mark Rijckenberg, that solved my question.
| Simos Xenitellis (simosx) said : | #12 |
Blacklisting the acer-wmi kernel module is a workaround.
The solution would be for Linux to automatically not load acer-wmi.
See bug report https:/
you could say that about nearly any fix on here. some sound devices need Alsa to have the model set and Snow Vaios need a boot option to make the touchpad work. Until companies start accommodating Linux, there will be this. I guess it could be in the installer I guess.
Sometimes the module is needed, especially for Acer based systems. Back in 2002
I would have to manually compile the module to get wifi working, now it's in the default kernel.
