Ubuntu

Hi I can't get my Ubuntu 11.04 desktop to work with a wifi modem attached to a winxp computer

Asked by Sjmward on 2012-03-07

We have a Huawei Optus 586 usb wifi broadband modem connected to a winxp computer - this wifi connection is picked up by all the laptops in the house but not by my desktop running Ubuntu 11.04. How do I go about getting this to work - do I need a wireless card?

Also as a separate but related problem, I have a dlink router which networks a printer but it appears that this at Auto eth 1 conflicts with my mobile broadband stick as I have to disconnect the Auth eth 1 connection before the mobile broadband will work correctly. At present I am using a usb virginbroadband prepaid stick to connect to the internet, but would like to have the option to use the Optus connection too.

I'm a newbie so please tell me exactly what terminal commands I need to use!

This is the output of the long terminal code written in "troubleshooting wireless connections"

you will need to share the connection on the XP system. You will then need to set the XP systems IP as the default gateway and manually set the DNS to something like 8.8.8.8 so that name resolution can happen.

Sjmward (sjmward) said : #2

I suppose this is the answer, but unfortunately I have not the vaguest idea how to do this - where do I find the settings? I have tried sharing the connection on the winxp computer but still no luck - is there something I'm missing. I'm not a computer buff so please give basic instructions! Many thanks.

Set the interface to static IP and set the IP to a range within the same netmask as your wifi. I assume the winxp IP address for the internet is different. You will need to set the DNS manuall too using this:
http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using.html

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Sjmward for more information if necessary.
