UNCLAIMED Wireless Network controller [0280]: RaLink Device [1814:5390] not working on HP Pavilion g7 Notebook PC in Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS

Asked by Tim Faile

I have attempted many different configurations to get wifi setup for my HP Pavilion g7 since I first installed Ubuntu Lucid onto my hard drive last summer without success. Now, I have only an old D-Link DI-524 wireless router to use for wifi. I know that the router works, because I have another Linux laptop (EEEPC) that connects without any trouble (just simple configuration stuff). When I connect this HP laptop using an Ethernet cable, a wired connection is possible, but I can never get wireless working on the same HP laptop.

If followed the instructions on:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure

Here was the output you requested (note that issuing the lspci -nn command does not reveal the wireless adapter info) while connected via an Ethernet cable:

tim@tim-devel:~$ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt5|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'anufact|roduct|erial|elease'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'wpa|icd|etwork'; sudo lsmod

According to this, your wifi device is not supported until somewhere between the 3.1.4 and the 3.2 kernel (rc4), which is still experimental.

I have a friend who got his rt5390 wireless to sort of work with 10.04. Still has problems though. many disconnects, which wicd seems to handle better than network-manager (at least it reconnects faster). He had to use the vendor supplied driver. Later releases (11.x series) seem to use the rt2800pci driver for some ralink drivers instead of the vendor supplied driver. Try 11.10 with the rt2800pci driver to see if that works.

Thanks for both suggestions. I finally (after 8 months of trying here and there) gotten wireless working on this laptop.

Other posts were helpful too, but this one worked. Thanks again.
