With my sister's little HPMini, I was able to plug the cord from the modem into the computer and download drivers for the Broadcom wifi. (System --> Administration --> Hardware Drivers). Two drivers showed up as available and I activated the second one, as I had seen instructed somewhere. It was much easier than manually downloading and installing the Broadcom driver for my own laptop, but obviously only works if you're able to physically plug into your modem.

go into the command line and type

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

to install the firmware for your broadcomm device.
