Wifi doesn't work on Dell laptop

Asked by Dougal Henderson

Hi, I can't get the wifi to work (doesn't pick up with wifi signal) although it says that it is activated and currently in use: Broadcom STA wireless driver. I have a Dell Latitude D520. I have followed the instructions for testing and include here the Terminal output. Thanks, Dougal

You seem to be experiencing bug 732677, but the open source b43 driver still works fine in 11.10, so disable the proprietary Broadcom STA driver (used to be under system/additional drivers, so I guess you search for "additional" in 11.10), ensure that exact line "blacklist b43" does not exist in any file in /etc/modprobe.d, (comment out or delete such lines), and make sure the output of lsmod contains b43, and does not contain wl. You will need to supply the firmware for the b43 driver, which is done simply from a wired connection, by installing the b43-fwcutter package:
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
and accept the download offer.
Wireless should start working when the firmware is installed, and you can select your network and enter your network keys.

Hi,
Thanks for your message, but I still can't get the wireless to work. I have disabled my Broadcom driver and think I have installed the new b43 driver as explained. I get a message saying b43-fwcutter is already the newest version if I try and reload it. However it does not show up in Additional Drivers, I still have only the disconnected Broadcom driver here. I have restarted computer, this hasn't changed anything. I have attached here the output from the lsmod command for your interest;
emma@emma-Latitude-D520:~$ lsmod

Copy-paste the following 3 commands into the Terminal.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer b43-fwcutter

Then REBOOT your PC and retest wireless.

Do the sudo apt-get purge b43-fwcutter also, so when you next install, it
will offer the firmware download.
