b43-phy0 ERROR: Firmware file "b43/ucode15.fw" not found -> Wireless Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g [14e4:4315] (rev 01) not working on Dell Vostro 1500 in Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS
I'm embarassingly new at this, but after reading some of these answers, I can't seem to resolve being able to get my laptop to connect to my wireless internet with Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS. I have a hard-wired connection that seems to work just fine, but the wireless connection is somehow disabled.

OK, we need to get some info on your hardware, so we can give you the correct instructions.
Open a terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T, or from the dash, then copy and paste these commands:
uname -a
lsb_release -a
lspci
lsmod
sudo lshw -C network
Then can you copy and paste (use mouse, or edit menu), the results back here. You will be prompted for your password on the last command, but as you type there will be no acknowledgement until you press enter.

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep rfkill; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Step 4: Please also specify the exact model and make of your PC (if known) on this thread
Step 5: Please also clarify if you installed Ubuntu to the harddisk and are running from a harddisk install OR if you are only testing Ubuntu in a LiveCD session.
Regards,
Mark

You can expect a lot of bugs when using a development version of Ubuntu.
You claim you are using Ubuntu 11.10, but you are in fact using an alpha build of Ubuntu 12.04.
Ubuntu 12.04 will be released in April 2012, so it is NOT ready yet.
I suggest installing Ubuntu 11.10, which is the latest STABLE version.

Well hell, how did I manage that? Do I need to uninstall the 12.04 version, or just download 11.10 over it?

I suggest you report a bug too, Precise is NOT released and NOT ready.

During the disk partitioning part of the installation process, Ubuntu 11.10 will allow you to format the root partition where Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha was stored, and keep the /home directory where your personal data was stored.
So there is no need to uninstall 12.04. You do not "uninstall" operating systems. You can only uninstall applications.
Operating system installers can overwrite and/or reuse disk partitions from other operating systems, if the file systems can be recognized by the overwriting operating system. This is not a problem in Ubuntu.
You can get Ubuntu 11.10 here:

However, if your root directory and /home directory are both stored on the SAME partition (very bad idea!), then it is best to format the partition using the 11.10 install routine. But before doing that, you will first need to backup any important data you have on the /home directory.

if you're new to linux and ubuntu, you should install version 10.04 instead, unless you're a techie and want to experiment with the system. an alpha release means it's the first verrsion and it is still full of bugs, some of which can destroy your data. as well, a lot of things may not work at all.

Ok, sorry - I'm back. I installed 10.04 and the wireless still didn't work, so I did all the recommendations in question 183492, and it still doesn't work. Then I got an error message about 'No propriety drivers are in use on this system', but when I try to activate the two that are shown, I get an error message that says 'failed to fetch.... Could not resolve 'us.archive.

Hi,
You need to install the following Broadcom driver package using apt-get or Synaptic package manager: bcmwl-kernel-source
This will of course require a working wirED Internet connection in Ubuntu. (wired, not wireless). So you first need to connect your wirED network card to the wireless router using a LAN cable (ethernet cable).
For example: using the Terminal, you need to run the following commands to install bcmwl-kernel-
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
Then reboot and retest wireless using Network Manager.
A similar explanation can be found at the end of these threads:

Mark

Okay, so I ran the command, I rebooted, it immediately showed me connected to the wireless network, but when I tried to connect to any page on Firefox, there isn't really a connection. Sigh..... so what next??

Can you help with this problem?
