Also, I've even tried switching cable ports on my router. The port that the ethernet cable is plugged into right now is the port I used moments ago for someone elses computer and that connected just fine so the problem is not the connection, it is the operating system. I need help!

Same problem here. Just upgraded to 11.10 today and found that 11.10 can not recognize my internet connection. Luckely, I have version 10.04 on same PC and here is no trouble connecting. Guess the problem is with the way 11.10 recognize internet.

Not expert on Internet.
Could you try to find those data with command ifconfig

netmask: 255.255.255.0
gateway: probably 192.168.1.1 as usual (you are number 2)
Your network works with Live CD 10.04 but not with installed 11.10.
Does your wired connection work with Live CD 11.10 (perhaps configuration issue) ?

Have tried to configure setup connection, followed the steps careful but without success.
Did a ifconfig on version 11.10 and got following result.

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
          RX packets:4 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:4 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
          RX bytes:240 (240.0 B) TX bytes:240 (240.0 B)

Looks to me that eth0 and eth7 is missing, must have been here before the upgrade to 11.10, version 11.04 connected without problems.

Is it possible to copy eth0 and etc7 values from version 10.04 to 11.10??

Can you connect to router with its IP address (e.g. http://192.168.1.1)? Address can be printed on a label at back of router.

On version 11.10, a http://192.168.1.1 request gives server not found
On version 10.04 the answer is: A username and password are being requested by http://192.168.1.1. The site says: "DSL Router"

Perhaps I should trow in the towel, and try to get a service engineer from my internet provider to try to restore connection. This is a lesson for me of not being to quick with updates, better let every new version go through an extended period of testing and bugs removal before considering updating.

i personally use ubuntu 11.10 and can easily access my router settings
with user name and password by entering 192.168.1.1 in the address
bar.....the problem may be somewhere else......try connecting with usb
if your modem supports or use a USB modem if available just to check
whether you can access internet like this.

The problem is probably not from Internet provider side, but from router or Ubuntu side.
Did you connect with router via USB or Ethernet ?
What is model of router and which is Internet provider ?

Version 10.04 connects either via USB or LAN, as did Version 11.04. Therefore the problem is not with router or provider as I see it, but with version 11.10.

With fourth top right icon, could you try to enable network ?

Click icon, drop down meny have check mark at enable network, when selected get info that network is now disconnected.

sudo lshw -C network on version 11.10 gave:
 logical name: eth2
Ethernet Device link=yes multicast=yes

sudo lshw -C network on version 10.04 gave:
 logical name: eth7
Ethernet Device ip=192.168.1.2 link=yes multicast=yes

Slightly different, don't know if it is significant

In 10.04, you got a local address given by router: 192.168.1.2
In 11.10, you get any address and so PC is unknown on network. In network parameter, check DHCP automatic is set to get IP address.

You can also try the following forums:

delance@delance-desktop on Ubuntu 11.10 :~$ sudo lshw -C network
  *-network
       logical name: eth0
       configuration: autonegotiation=on broadcast=yes driver=forcedeth driverversion=0.64 duplex=full ip=192.168.1.2 latency=0 link=yes maxlatency=20 mingnt=1 multicast=yes port=MII speed=100Mbit/s
You should get an IP address.
I suspect the issue is in driver, but it's outside my knowledge.

Thanks for your help, just one last question. Do you think it would help if I repeated the upgrade to 11.10 from a disc, if it is a driver problem.

Revision history for this message
delance (olivier-delance) said :

Theoretically no, as the disc will use same drivers as update-manager.
But frequently, upgrade from disc has less issue than update via network.

Can you help with this problem?
