if you're using version 10.04, press CTL+ALT+T to go into terminal then type

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

type your password when asked. it will not show on the screen.

if you're using 11.10, click on the terminal icon, it should be at the bottom of the panel that's on the left side, and type

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

enter your password when asked.

The b43-fwcutter, when installed from a wired connection, will offer to download the Broadcom firmware appropriate for your chip. Your chip also has open-source firmware available, but you have to select the correct version, which would be the firmware-b43-lpphy-installer for your LP-PHY 4312 chip.

Try installing the package linux-firmware-nonfree, that should get what you need. If you had just done an upgrade, I thought the firmware files should have been still available.

Hi,
I did not upgrade, I reinstall then I don''t know how to set up wireless. I tried to do like the previous instruction
" if you're using 11.10, click on the terminal icon, it should be at the bottom of the panel that's on the left side, and type

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

enter your password when asked."
but haven''t worked.

At some point, the package scripts changed and looks like the download is no longer part of the b43-fwcutter package, but was moved to the firmware-b43???installer (several of them) packages. You could also pick put the fight one and install it, and it should offer to do the download, (or maybe just do it, I didn't check the script that carefully). The other firmware package I mentioned just installs a lot of firmware, including the Broadcom -- but I'm not sure if it has problems with any specific chip or it works on all of them. Things change over time, and I for one have been giving out old advice for awhile, which I recently discovered.

Sorry, that should have been the firmware-b43-lpphy-installer package. Looks like you made a typo according to the error message.Or just install package linux-firmware-nonfree, that should work too.
