Connection only to 2 Linux machines via Ethernet

Asked by Raymond Keenan

I have a laptop (Ubuntu 11.04) which is a fantastic OS and an older PC (ABit with Linux Mint 11) All I want to do is connect the laptop and PC to each other via my Ethernet cable which works fine because I connected to the Internet via it. And be able to access each others files. All Ubuntu and Mint want to do is connect me to the Internet. When I disconnect from using my wireless connectivity to the Internet and drop down to 'New Wireless Connection' it disconnects me from the Internet and sulks, not allowing me to connect via 'eth0' or 'Wired connection 1' Why can't I have a lower level of connectivity to 2 machines without the need to go to the Internet? I have tried all sorts of editing the settings of 'auto eth0' and 'lo' by using the local IP address 127.0.0.1 What am I doing wrong????
Thanks

You can share the files with samba easily, or if you have ssh installed you can access sshfs easily. As long as both systems can ping each other you have no issue. If both systems are going through a router, then you can access the files via that so no need for the ethernet

You can connect two PCs without a router, but I think you need a cross-over ethernet cable. Then you have to set up the appropriate IPs, and routing. Much easier to let the router do all that.

Yes you'll need a crossover for p2p but if you have a web connecttion via a single router, why complicate things with an extra connection. It can be done and it's not very hard but it's not very necessary

Can you help with this problem?
