Asked by Ryan Gravel

I am able to ifconfig wlan0 up, iwlist wlan0 scan and it shows access points. Network manager will not enable wireless. There is a function switch on the keyboard to toggle wireless and it is on. I have tried wiping the system and installing Ubuntu 11.10 32bit, and OpenSuSE 12.1 with the same results. I have only successfully used the wireless from a Knoppix 6.7 live CD. The following is the output from the Wireless troubleshooting page.

grep is already the newest version.
The following extra packages will be installed:
  libhal1 libhd16
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  hwinfo libhal1 libhd16

Please copy-paste the following command into the Terminal and then press
<ENTER>:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Using the gedit editor, please ADD the following configuration line into
the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

blacklist acer_wmi

Using the gedit editor, SAVE the change to the

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file.

Then REBOOT and retest wireless. This blacklist operation should make
the change permanent, even after rebooting.

This should force the Linux kernel to stop loading the acer_wmi module,
which is probably causing the kernel to soft block your wireless adapter.

The acer-wireless interface is an invalid wireless interface on your
computer, because you are using a Lenovo U400 , not an
ACER computer.

hwinfo libhal1 libhd16 have nothing to do with wifi functioning. check whether proprietary drivers are available for your particular w lan card by selecting Additional drivers option from System Settings menu and if it's available then install it. reply back the results.

Thanks Mark Rijckenberg, that solved my question.
