11.10 Ubuntu installation cannot access Graphics & Wireless drivers

Asked by Susan Simpson

C200 Lenovo All in One PC, originally with Win 7 Home premium OS (Oem) installed and Ubuntu running alongside it. Hard drive failed. Installed brand new hard drive, but only installing Ubuntu OS. (Having problems getting computer supplier to provide Win OS disks and Backup/Mirror on external back-up drive non functional)
Tried installing 10.4 using live USB which gave me wireless access initially but on first reboot after installation of OS and removal of pendrive, failed to find Graphics or Wireless drivers.
Tried re-installation from live CD, with same result, but no wireless available at all . Tried to make CD a 'resource' option as unable to connect to web for downloads, wouldn't let me do so.
Reformatted drive completely and attempted new OS installation using new live USB with Ubuntu 11.10. This time no wireless connection at all, not even with the USB.
Appears to have only partly installed. No Synaptic package manager available, reduced Graphics, no wireless. Followed various Ubuntu 'help' threads, such as loading ndiswrapper and associated files, but in trying to implement find there doesn't appear to be any 'modeprobe' or 'blacklist' files.
At a total loss as to what else to try other than throwing machine out of the window!!

We'll need a little information to provide any help. Please run the following in a terminal and cut/paste the results here:
sudo lshw -C network
rfkill list
lsb_release -a
Your machine is probably fine, just a matter of getting the right software set up. Unfortunately, the wireless setup causes problems, partly a result of proprietary software which is not allowed in the automatic installation.

Hi,
Thanks for the response.
Ran command in terminal and got this reply:

        Hardware Lister (lshw) - B.02.15
        Usage: lsw [-format] [-options ...]

        -version print program version (B.02.15)

        format can be
-html output hardware tree as HTML
                -xml " " " " as xml
                -short output hardware paths
                -businfo output bus info

        options can be
                - class CLASS only show a certain class of hardware
                -C CLASS same as above
                -c CLASS same as above
-disable TEST disable a test (like pci, isapnp, cupid, etc.)

                -enable TEST enable " " " " " "
"
                -quiet don't display status
-sanitize sanitize output (remove sensitive info like
serial numbers, etc.)
-numeric output numeric IDs (for PCI, USB, etc)
end of command reply.

Should also add that I have limited mouse capacity along with everything
else, so have copied this 'by hand' as cannot work out how to 'cut and
paste' anything on the sick PC.

Thanks again for your support

Susan

Try the commands again, they need to be exactly transcribed, all the output indicated was that the command (syntax) was bad.
No need to repeat the previous reply in your messages, it makes the web interface hard to read.
This output should give the wireless hardeware:
sudo lshw -C network

This output will give us the distribution you are currently running:
lsb_release -a

This output will give us the state of your wireless hardware/software switches
rfkill list

Sorry about excess in last reply, I've never tried this before and wasn't aware that literally everything popped up online from an email response!
Am working on an ancient laptop with several non functioning keys so hope I am reporting back correctly what I 'see' on the PC!

reply this time to first command:

*-network unclaimed; description: network controller product: AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI -Express)
vendor: Atheros Comms Inc.
physical id: 0
bus info:pci@0000:03:00.0
version: 01
width:64 bits
clock:33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress cap_list
config: latency+0
resources: memory:f1100000-f110ffff
*-network UNCLAIMED
descrip:Ethernet controller
product: 82552 10/100 Network Connection
vendor: Intel Corp
physical id: 8
bus info:pci@0000:01:08.0
version: 02
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHZ
capabilities pm cap_list
config: latency+64 maxlatency+56 mingnt+8
resources: memory:f1200000-f1200fff ioport:dc00(size+64)

the second command gave me:

No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Descrip: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10
Codename: oneiric

the 'rfkill list' command gave no response of any description, not even a "not a valid command" so I suspect I'm not typing something correctly?

No joy!
The command didn't appear to do anything other than check for my password

Take a look at question 177053 response #3, and follow Mark's instructions. You should use a usb or floppy to transfer the script/output if necessary, as it's too big to manually copy it. That will give us all the relevant info at once.

Many thanks to all who have assisted with my query. Just couldn't work out how to follow your last set of instructions with the limited mouse/system I had.

Happily help in human form locally came up with some relevant disks and found the missing drivers.

I now have my wireless connection up and running and can update my system directly.

Thanks again for your super support for an ignorant user!
