changing a internal winmodem irq

Asked by Jack

my modem is using irq 255 and I will like to change it to irq 5 that is free. The modem was working before, but I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 stop working. I use scanModem and found out that the modem was not working because the irq was set to 255. Before I could enter in the menu.lst file "pci=routeirq", but now there is not menu.lst file any more. I hope you can help.

Thank you,
Jack

Grub2 uses the grub.cfg file instead of menu.lst, which I suppose you could edit, but it gets regenerated frequently, so the proper way to make such a change is to edit the /etc/default/grub file and change the
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
line to ...="pci=routeirq"

when you say winmodem, does it state that on the box or anywhere else? "winmodems" were designed to run specifically in windozes environments only.

I will need to take it out the box to see. I will let you know. My wife has the same problem, but hers were working with her modem and it drop off when I when I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. I when back to 10.10 but now the problem persisted. My computer has Ubuntu 64 bit and my wifes have 32 bit. Someone told me that the drivers of the winmodem are not compatible with the 64 bit. her computer is a old Dell and the modem came with it. I am going to tried with hers to see if I have better luck. Her problem is similar that is using a high IRQ, but the IRQ is 19. First I am going to try to take out the modem, and start the computer and then install it back up in a different slot. If it does not work then I am going to try Ubfan answer, and then take it from there. Thank you for your responds. I will let you know what work.
