No dns lookup after upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10

Asked by keepitsimpleengr

Upgrade on ideapad S12 (intel Atom) from internet.

Used wired LAN to avoid WiFi problems.

After upgrade WiFi works.

After upgrade completed, there is no dns lookup capability. DNS server can be pinged and is working for other systems on LAN.

Wicd Network Manager (default Network Manager does not work on the S12) shows proper DNS server IP.

Skype works.

Foxfire and ping cannot resolve cannot resolve IP address of google.com

Tried restarting the computer but no joy.

Any ideas?

Well I took a chance and added this line with the nameservers IP address to /etc/resolv.conf…

nameserver nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn

and now I have a working dns client.

This has got to be a BUG...

The above "answer" only works for the current session and does not survive a reboot.

Apparently the ubuntu online upgrade to 11.10 installs the non-working network manager, which overwrites /etc/resolv.conf at boot. I removed it with synaptic and now the work·around survives a reboot.

Can you help with this problem?
