Computer stuck on airplane mode

Asked by Tamir Elazar

Ever since i installed ubuntu 11.10 i can't get it off airplane mode, meaning i can get online if i use a cable, but the wireless won't work.
When i set airplane mode off it seems to switch off, but as soon as i close the window it goes on again. What do i do?!

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a; sudo rfkill list

Thanks

How do you initiate 'airplane mode'?

If you have a switch to enable/disable wifi then please switch it and try wireless things. If not then you can run:

sudo rfkill unblock all

And then retry.

if you mean the switch on System Settings > Network, when i try to switch it on it goes back off right away (because of airplane mode). I tried the code you gave me (sudo rfkill unblock all) but it didn't do anything and the wifi still won't turn on.

I am having this exact same issue. When I turn on wireless via the switch, it immediately turns itself back off. I can move the switch for Airplane mode from the right to the left and it will say its off. However, if I close the network settings manager and open it again it is still on Airplane mode.

I've also attempted to reinstall and reupdate ubuntu via LAN connection and the problem remains. The problem also occurs on this laptop when I load ubuntu via flash drive.

Any information I can provide to assist in a solution for this problem I would be glad to give.

I also have the exact same problem. I have tried:

sudo rfkill unblock all

But it didn't help.

I am running Ubuntu on an Acer Aspire One, ZG5. Ubuntu 10.04 worked with no issues, but after updating to 11.10 I cannot get wifi to work.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have the same problem, I have tried to launch Ubuntu from an earlier verison on a USB device but the flight mode still won't go off... I have an Acer Aspire One as well by the way.

I've also tried Fedora 15 and had the exact same issue in Gnome 3.

My laptop is a

Lenovo B570
Intel Pentium CPU @ 2.10GHz x2
Installed Memory: 3.00 GB
Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter

I'm fairly certain that it is the network card and/or how the hardware switch for the wireless card behaves. Like most laptops, I can press a key on my laptop to turn on/off the wireless card. On this laptop its Fn + F5. On the front of the laptop there is a light to indicate rather or not the wirless network card is enabled.

In Ubuntu, if I press Fn + F5 with the network manager open, airplane mode will switch to the off position, then immediately move back to the on position. So my best guess is that something is preventing Ubuntu from realizing the card is turned on.

Same issue here. Lenovo Ideapad S12 w/Broadcom BCM 4312 wireless chipset (using b43-pci-bridge module driver).

The only "solution" that worked for me was to install wicd wireless manager. I use that instead of the default Unity/Gnome Network Manager interface. Although sometimes when I boot up I still have to go to the default Network Manager interface and disable Airplane Mode. After that, I can open up wicd and connect to my wireless LAN.

Same here, airplane mode will engage out of nowhere and cannot be switched off.
