Is there a switch or shortcut on the system. If so, press or switch it. If not then you can run:

sudo rfkill unblock all

Had identical issue after upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 on my Acer One. Wifi switch was inactive and the wifi menu did not list available networks. Did a post upgrade clean-up via Ubuntu Tweak. All of a sudden Wifi menu offered automatic connection option and connected immediately. I don't get it myself but that's what happened before I had a chance to use HTH's answer which I'm sure would have worked as well. Thanks to HTH.

Hi actionparsnip
it didnt work but have found the other 11.10 did accept the one touch
on the wireless switch, therefore I have what i need.....a wireless
conection..the only inconvenience i have is that on boot up menu I have
to scroll down to required 11.10. On the one that doesnt work ie the
first automatic one to boot up I have tried to install wicd and when
that didnt work I tried wicd client kde and that doesnt work? Would you
have any idea why this doesnt work?
thanks for your help
I will post another question about this!?
