Bluetooth fails to enable

Asked by Braden G

Hi i apologise in advance for being new to Ubuntu.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 11.10 onto my netbook Toshiba NB550D.

the issues i am having are with the bluetooth and wireless. The bluetooth drivers appears to have installed correctly but the bluetooth doesn't work at all, the bluetooth is part of the wireless adapter as it is a "combo card" (Atheros AR9002WB-1NG Wireless Network Adapter) . when i try to enable bluetooth the system lags then comes right but the bluetooth still says "bluetooth is disabled" i can apparently turn bluetooth on and off from the system tray icon but this does nothing.

I was wondering what is causing this and how to fix it.
Thanks

Here is a debug info suggested by so: http://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure i'm not sure if it is useful

Braden - I have exactly the same netbook with the same issue, my upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 had no effect and I still cannot get the bluetooth to enable correctly.

How did you perform the upgrade?

Upon the upgrade to 11.10 i found that the "hardware switch" (a software triggered hardware switch which can be used only inside windows) suddenly had an impact on the bluetooth inside of ubuntu.

i have tried many times before in 11.04 booting into windows and turning the "switch" on using Toshiba's function key program but it did not effect ubuntu at all as it being on or off didn't matter as it still didn't work. When i upgraded to 11.10 i was able to boot into windows change the state of the switch to "on" and upon reboot into ubuntu use the bluetooth.

For me, also with a NB550D, sometimes booting into windows to enable bluetooth works, others it doesn't. It seems to get disabled after a power down, so it isn't fixed.

Recently upgraded to kernel 3.0.0-14 and the bluetooth is now working properly, I made no other changes and I noticed that the full configuration menu for bluetooth is available and I've managed to tether my iPhone to my netbook.
