Question #150872 same problem on Dell Latitude D530?
I have followed the instructions to solve my wireless problem due to BCM4312 not being active. Checked bios to insure is set enabled. As suggested in the above question, when I invoked the last command "sudo rfkill unblock all" command did not process. Message <sudo: unable to resolve host....
This laptop was working ok with 10.04. Did a clean install after formatting drive. Now unable to see wireless adapter with network manager. Only shows "Enable Networking". "Wireless Networks" in NM is shaded.
Any help appreciated.

Hi,
Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).
In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:
Step 1:
If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications-
If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.
So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal
Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https:/
Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/
Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.
Regards,
Mark

Hi,
You need to install the following Broadcom driver package using apt-get or Synaptic package manager: bcmwl-kernel-source
This will of course require a working wirED Internet connection in Ubuntu. (wired, not wireless)
For example: using the Terminal, you need to run the following commands to install bcmwl-kernel-
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source
Also run the following command:
gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.
Using the gedit editor, DELETE the following configuration line:
blacklist wl
SAVE the change to the /etc/modprobe.
The problem is that you have blacklisted the wireless driver (wl driver) that you actually need to activate in order to get wireless working....
Then reboot and retest wireless using Network Manager.
Regards,
Mark

Hello Mark
I performed the above instructions, but as you can see, there is no blacklist wl. Is there something else in the blacklist that is preventing the wireless card from activation? Do I need the BCM wl driver?

Seven hours ago, you correctly copy-pasted my command, but not this time. Why?
The output is incorrect and probably due to chopping my original command into pieces.
PLEASE reread what I wrote in step TWO:

Your wireless issue looks very similar to the following issue, which was solved:
https:/
The following Terminal output (that you sent us) shows the issue that your wireless card is
having
"
0: brcmwl-0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
1: dell-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: yes
eth1 Failed to read scan data : Invalid argument
"
So your wireless card is disabled by a hardware switch, a
special key combination (Fn-F2, etc...), by incorrect BIOS settings for
wireless, or a COMBINATION of these factors...
There might also be a BIOS option that allows you to have the wireless
functionality controlled "By application"
Search for the "by application" option in the BIOS and select it (if
possible)....
Then reboot and retest wireless using wicd (network manager).
Also run the following 2 Terminal commands to try to change the rfkill
state of your wireless chipset after rebooting:
rfkill unblock all
sudo rfkill unblock all
Then retest wireless using wicd (network manager).

Oops, I see that you already tried my very last suggestion and mentioned it in the description!
Well, Ubuntu 11.10 has been released yesterday. I suggest installing and testing wireless using Ubuntu 11.10
Sorry, but I have no further suggestions to make....
Can you help with this problem?
Provide an answer of your own, or ask Harold Heinbaugh for more information if necessary.
