Installed Ubuntu, lost WiFi

Asked by Valentino Sanchez

Hello,
I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 onto my HP Pavilion zd7005qv. I did a complete install, removing the existing XP OS. When the system opened, no WiFi. I am new to the Linux environment, so please be explicit. I went to the HP site, but their drivers don't support this OS. Need to know how to get the working.
Thanks

Please proceed with the following Terminal commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer

b43-fwcutter exists in the Ubuntu repositories, but you will need a
working wired Internet connection in Ubuntu in order to locate it and
install it.

The only way to do that - in your case - is to connect the pc to the
wireless router using a LAN cable, instead of using wireless.

Then reboot your PC and retest wireless.

Hope it helps.

hello all,
Thanks for the suggestions so far, but still can't get the wireless working.

I have gone to the following site; http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware and download the correct firmware (version 3).
I followed the directions and entered the sudo codes, rebooted, checked for uninstalled software... still no success.

If I can't get the wireless recognized, I'll uninstall and try Fedora. If neither Linux OS works, I guess I'll have to go back to Windows...

Btw - how do you uninstall?

Try these commands instead:

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

sudo apt-get install firmware-b43legacy-installer

Then reboot and retest wireless.

@Valentino Sanchez

I've noticed when you ask about uninstalling Ubuntu, no one helps. Have you figured it out yet?

@Joey and Valentino: there is no such thing as uninstalling an operating system (like Ubuntu, Windows or Mac OS X).

The partition where the operating system (in this case: Ubuntu) is stored, will simply be formatted by the disk partitioner of the next operating system that you will install (which seems to be Fedora in Valentino's case).

So the Fedora install routine will allow you to install Fedora side by side next to Ubuntu or use the whole Ubuntu partition for use by Fedora....
