Toshiba l755-s5256 NO Lan NO WiFi 10.04 LTS

Asked by laser09

Just bought a new Toshiba Laptop L755-S5256. August 20, 2011

http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/satellite/L750/L755-S5256

I want to use the WIRED LAN connection and I do not have a Wireless Network.

My goal is to get the LAN connection to function. If I have to, I will set up a wireless network to access the internet.
I would prefer to use a wired connection.

Installed 10.04 LTS along side Windows 7 that was pre-installed.

Everything that I have tried so far seems to function, EXCEPT the LAN connection and the WiFi icon in the top panel shows a RED "!" through the WiFi symbol.

Then I went to Ubuntu and noticed that there is a 10.04.3 LTS .

I downloaded the 10.04.3 intel desktop x86 .iso and burned it to a CD, thinking that there may be new drivers (etc.) for new hardware on a current new Toshiba Laptop.

When I went to overwrite 10.04 LTS with 10.04.3 LTS, I did not see a way to uninstall 10.04 LTS and Not Destroy Windows 7 in the process. It looked like I could create another 10.04.3 LTS partition, but I don't want to create a bigger mess.

I ran 10.04.3 LTS Live to see if it would see the LAN and WiFi network. It DID NOT see the network.

I noticed that there were new packages on 10.04.3 LTS that I could access running 10.04 LTS from the 10.04.3 LTS CD.

I installed them into 10.04.LTS and they are:

ndisgtk 0.8.5-1

ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 1.54-2ubuntu1

ndiswrapper-common 1.54-2ubuntu1

and now I have a NEW dialog box under System > Administration > Windows Wireles Drivers , looking for a .inf file .

The wired LAN still does not work.

Here is some data from the terminal from commands that I found in forums searching for answers before posting this in launchpad.net. I have limited Linux knowledge and would appreciate any help I can get.

Do not assume that I have the knowledge of a system administrator when you provide help. If you skip a step, I will be lost.

If I have to remove 10.04 LTS , how do I preserve the existing Windows 7 software installation ?

Also, if we can solve this issue, can I run the 64 bit version of 10.04.3 LTS or is that just for AMD ?

Thank You in advance ! :)

All The Best.

The 64bit will work on Intels too, AMD just got to the 64bit desktop first, it's just kinda stuck.

I thought desktop support was three years.

("LTS releases are supported for three years on the desktop and five years on the server.[16]"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu_%28operating_system%29

*****

If I want to try "Natty Narwhal" how do I remove 10.04 LTS ?

Remember, I have no network connection.

*****

I could really use help to "Uninstall" 10.04.LTS without destroying Windows 7 ... Please.

Thanks Again

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Appears Lucid Desktop runs even after Natty dies, Could try the live CD Natty to test it. It won't make changes to your OS.

Andrew, Thank You so much for the suggestions. I am unclear on two things you said.

1. "The desktop support ends at the same time as the Lucid desktop stops.... "

2. "Appears Lucid Desktop runs even after Natty dies,"

Are you speaking about the Ubuntu OS support or the OS process running in the laptop ?

All The Best,

John

I thought the support for Lucid died when Natty died. After a release is EOL it will still run, it will just get no updates and won't be supported here or in #ubuntu on irc.freenode.net That's all.

Have you tried the liveCD of natty?

Sorry for the delay. Burner problems.

Ubuntu 11.04 sees the LAN !

The problem is the interface in 11.04 is more like Apple than the "PC" interface of 10.04 . (I'm lost.)

1. How can I get the desktop back to a user interface similar to 10.04 ?

2. Still need to get 10.04 off the new Toshiba L755....need help.

How can I find instructions in LaunchPad.net (or elsewhere) to remove Linux partitions and Grub from a Windows 7 Laptop and restore the Windows MBR ?

Thanks in advance.

If you log of and select the Ubuntu Classic session, it will be more familiar. This is going to be the standard Gnome desktop in Natty and onwards. Unity2D replaces Gnome Classic in Oneiric and onwards.

Sorry for the "hurricane" delay...

I have learned that a new Toshiba Laptop will need the latest Ubuntu release to function and find the hardware.

And, If you have a new Toshiba Laptop there is a option shown in the Grub bootloader that says Windows Vista not Windows 7. The Windows "Vista" partition is the Toshiba "out of the box" default backup software recovery program.

Just boot into the Windows "Vista" partition and follow the instruction to restore a new current Toshiba Laptop back to "out of the box" configuration.

Then, if you want to run Ubuntu you can decide if you want to install it "through" Windows 7 with Wubi ( http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/windows-installer ) for a easy unistall option, or side by side on your hard disk with the grub bootloader for a more permanent installation.

Always use the latest version of Ubuntu and forget about the LTS version when installing on brand new hardware and laptops.

Thank you for your help...
