Asked by Hari Rawulwar

I have installed Ubuntu 11.0.4 on Windows 7.
My laptop model is Sony VAIO VPCEG16FM.
It has inbuilt wireless card : Intel Centrino Wireless-N + WiMAX 6150
My wireless router is Netgear RangeMax WPN824 v3.

I',m not able to connect to Internet wirelessly.
Looks like Ubuntu is not identifying the wireless card.

Here is the complete output of following command:
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt5|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'Manufact|Product'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|wmi|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'icd|etwork'; sudo lsmod

Please read the last remark from Ultraman at the following location:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=924554

Ultraman solved it by blacklisting the acer_wmi module, which your computer has loaded into memory.

Please copy-paste the following command into the Terminal and then press <ENTER>:

gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

Using the gedit editor, please ADD the following configuration line into the file:

blacklist acer_wmi

Using the gedit editor, SAVE the change to the

/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file.

Then REBOOT and retest wireless.

This should force the Linux kernel to stop loading the acer_wmi module, which is probably causing the kernel to soft block your wireless card via the INVALID "acer-wireless: Wireless LAN" interface.

acer-wireless is for ACER computers, not for Sony or Lenovo machines....

To prove that I am not simply dreaming, please take a look at the following page: :-)

http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/laptop/457107-lenovo-b560.html

Read the remarks from forumuser Bilincaltix....

Thanks Mark.
This worked like charm.
After blacklisting acer_wmi module and rebooting, the message popped up that wireless connections are available.
I just had to select my wireless and connection was established.
Thanks again.
This solved my problem.

Regards
Hari
