ndiswrapper

Asked by David Turner

Hi, I managed to install ndiswrapper successfully a few days ago AND installed successfully the appropriate drivers for the NetGear WNA3100 wireless adapter AND ran some command-line tests I found on some help-files and these all worked successfully and identified my adapter.

Next I looked at configuring the adapter and discovered the tool to use was "gnome-network-admin"

This wasn't installed on my Ubuntu11.04 so I downloaded it off the Ubuntu site.

When I launched it from the command line using "sudo network-admin" there were only 3 tabs that appeared:
  General, DNS and Hosts

They appear to display correct information BUT there is no "Connections" tab where I understand I enter the Network Name, Wireless security and Password!

Can you help guide me through the configuration stages to get to the ability to access the internet via the wireless adapter on Ubuntu??

I suggest you use network manager (in the default install) or you can use wicd which is slightly more flexible

when i try to run network manager from the command line it tells me it is already loaded. I haven't found any good walkthoughs to configure my adapter using the network tools. Can you tell me step by step all the inputs I need to make to get my wireless adapter working so to go on the internet. I already have it working on the same PC but under Windows.

Thanks. It gave me some useful info. BUT...

I went through the guide to Edit Wireless Connection and input all the relevant info, copying the info that is listed on the Windows7 counterpart (on the same machine) whcich already works under Windows7.

"Enable Wireless - Clicked" BUT Firefox web browser failed to launch ".. Unable to connect"

I typed in, afterwards, sudo lsusb AND it successfully recongnised my Decvice, listing "Bus001 Device 004:ID 0846:9020 Netgear inc)

But I typed in sudo lshw -C network and it listed the ethernet connection only and no wireless device:

The help files you pointed to didn't seem to offer anything to do in this scenario:

Please advise

If you run:

sudo iwlist scan

Do you see wireless networks?

I Get the following from Ubuntu :

dturner@ubuntu:/$ sudo iwlist scan
[sudo] password for dturner:
lo Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

dturner@ubuntu:/$
