wireless networks do not show up and cannot get connection

Asked by Jordan Cochet

I am very new to Linux, and have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 onto my laptop. I love it other than I cannot connect to a wireless network. My lap top is an Acer Aspire 5570Z. It is supposed to have a Atheros 5k wireless card. I have been searching for fixes and have replaced network manager with Wicd Network manager. No wireless networks show up when Wicd searches, but I do have Internet with Ethernet cable but it doesn't show a connection to my home network.

I know I need to prompt in the terminal to get information for you but I don't know what to put.

Hi,

Please first connect your wired network adapter to the wireless router using an ethernet cable (also known as a LAN cable).

In order to gather essential troubleshooting information about your wireless card, please follow this procedure:

Step 1:

If you are using the Gnome interface, open the Terminal console via "Applications->Accessories->Terminal"

If you are using the Unity interface, the easiest way to open the Terminal is to use the 'search' function on the dash. Or you can click on the 'More Apps' button, click on the 'See more results' by the installed section, and find it in that list of applications. A third way, available after you click on the 'More Apps' button, is to go to the search bar, and see that the far right end of it says 'All Applications'. You then click on that, and you'll see the full list. Then you can go to Accessories > Terminal after that.

So the methods in Unity are:
Dash > Search for Terminal
Dash > More Apps > 'See More Results' > Terminal
Dash > More Apps > Accessories > Terminal

Step 2: Please copy-paste the following command from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WirelessTroubleshootingProcedure in Firefox into the Linux Terminal. Do NOT copy-paste from the Email message into the Terminal, as that will only copy PART of the command. The command STARTS with the word sudo and ENDS with the word lsmod. So please copy-paste the ENTIRE command below from Firefox into a Terminal, press <enter>, then enter password when sudo asks for password, then press enter again.

Tip: If you have a wheel mouse or 3 button mouse you do not need to type commands into the Terminal. Highlight the command written on the page. Move your cursor anywhere in the Terminal and press the wheel or middle button. Automatic Copy and paste! No spelling mistakes! No Typos! No other errors!

sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hwinfo grep; sudo lshw -C network; rfkill list; sudo iwlist scanning; cat /etc/network/interfaces; cat /etc/lsb-release; lspci -nn; lsusb; sudo lshw -short; uname -a; dmesg | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|ireless|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|ound|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt5|rt6|rt7|usb|witch|wl';sudo dmidecode|egrep 'Manufact|Product'; iwconfig; cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep 'acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|brcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl'; cat /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state; sudo hwinfo --netcard ; ps -aux|egrep 'icd|etwork'; sudo lsmod

Step 3: Please post results (copy/paste terminal output) on this thread. The troubleshooters here need to see the full Terminal output from running the above command.

Regards,

Mark

I don't think you need all the package lists so I will only show after downloaded packages.

Hi, your wireless card is Atheros AR2413. For this card I found, some time ago (2009), the instructions for install Madwifi. These instractions worked well in recent years. Here they are:

Madwifi installation for Atheros card

Hi guys in this thread you will the instructions to install Madwifi drivers for Atheros wireless cards. Please follow the instructions to the word.

Open the 'terminal' by navigating through Applications-->Accessories--> Terminal (Gnome) for Unity follow the previous instructions

Now type the following commands in terminal

1.
Code:

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

From there make sure you uncomment anything that starts with "deb" in there. So changer it from "#deb" to "deb" Something along thoes lines. To exit and save hit "CTRL+X" the answer "YES" to do you want to save, then finally hit "ENTER"

2.
Code:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

3.
Code:

sudo apt-get install build-essential libssl-dev

4.
Code:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`

5.
Code:

sudo apt-get install subversion

6.
Code:

sudo -i

7.
Code:

sudo svn checkout http://svn.madwifi-project.org/madwifi/trunk/ madwifi-ng

8.
Code:

cd madwifi-ng

9.
Code:

echo "" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

10.
Code:

echo "#Remove To Install MadWIFI Drivers" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

11.
Code:

echo "blacklist ath9k" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

12.
Code:

echo "blacklist ath5k" >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist

13.
Code:

make && make install

14.
Code:

echo ath_pci >> /etc/modules

Restart your machine.
It should work

Well i use Wicd to connect to the wireless modem
To install Wicd type the following commands in terminal
Code:

sudo apt-get update

Code:

sudo apt-get install wicd

Kernal updates of your system will kill your driver. Well no need to worry about that.Just recompile your driver.
For that you open a terminal and type the command
Code:

sudo -i

and just repeat the steps from No 8. Your madwifi will cone back to life again.

Best of Luck
Dr Kurian

Ok, now we can purge network-manager. Do these commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get purge network-manager
sudo apt-get purge wicd
sudo apt-get install wicd

You might need to reboot to fully remove NetworkManager and let wicd take over. Then let me know thanks.

I rebooted the computer and no networks show up still. They show up on my girlfriends computer, so I assume the modem is putting out a signal. It doesn't even show connection to the home network with Ethernet cable connected but i do have Internet working with it plugged in.

I find this on Ubuntu documentation (you are using 2.6.38 kenrel, so these indication must done):

Additional step for kernel 2.6.32.22 and later

Kernel 2.6.32.22 changed the default for the rfkill parameter of ath_pci from 0 to 1, which had the effect of killing the methods described above. You'll need to make sure that it's set back to 0 on system startup. To do that, edit (or create) the file /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf to include the line options ath_pci rfkill=0

Your wireless should work after you reboot.

To do these commands:

- sudo -i
- echo ath_hal >> /etc/modules
- echo options ath_pci rfkill=0 >> /etc/modprobe.d/options.conf

Thanks.

I have done all this. Now Wicd prompts to get info about my net work card when I log in. Wireless networks still do not show up. I don't know if I am doing something wrong or this computer has a real bug in it? I appreciate all the time you are helping me.

Thanks for the time.

Hi, after you done "sudo ifconfig atho up", done this other command: sudo lshw -C network and post the result. After all you check the encryption settings in wicd need to be perfectly synchronized with the encryption settings in the wireless router.
I also think it is necessary to keep SSID broadcasting enabled on the router, when encryption is enabled or disabled. In my case, this is required to get wireless working on my pc.

But you probably know this already.

So I suggest trying the different encryption alternatives one by one, WEP, WPA, WPA2....

Thanks many.

I believe this issue with AR2413 is due to a serious regression in the 2.6.38 kernel version in Ubuntu 11.04

I suggest booting from the Ubuntu 10.10 LiveCD and then retesting wireless. If it works during the 10.10 LiveCD session, then I recommend installing Ubuntu 10.10.

Thank you Mark. I have booted in 10.10live cd
I then decided to just install it because I can upgrade to 11.04 later.
I now have installed Wicd network manager and Removed Default manager.
I still have no wireless networks showing up, not even the wep ones around me.
I have another laptop like this one so I switched Wireless cards and no help.
