Rather than using pppoeconf on the command-line, set up your connection via Network Manager (in the top-right panel). It should do that sort of thing automatically for you.

1) Click on the Network Manager icon in the tray, and select "Edit Connections".
2) In the "Network Connections" window that appears, select the "DSL" tab.
3) Click on "Add"
4) Enter your DSL username and password in the correct boxes. Only enter the service if you were given one, as most providers don' require it. Ignore the other tabs, as the defaults for them are fine.
5) Check "Connect automatically"
6) Click "Save..."

And you should be good to go. Hope this helps.
